Default Bbc 454 build.

Starting to build 454 bbc to my Chris craft 260 stinger. My goal is to make efficient 450-500hp @5200rpm with most low end torque. Going to use 14072360 casting peanut port heads with good valve Job and mild porting. Heads are going to flowbench before/after modifications. This is my first bbc build so all help from you guys is needed.

parts that i allready have.

- stock gm mark4 4bolt block, 030 over, zero deck
- speed pro 2349 forged pistons. Dome height will be machined when heads are done. Shooting for 9.5 compressio.
- stock 454 magnum rods
- stock 454 magnum forged crank
- 14072360 peanut port heads.

parts needed.

- hyd roller cam/valves/valvetrain?
- intake manifold?
- exhaust manifolds?
- carburettor or fitech/holley efi?

I personally would strongly recommend using 781 or 048 heads (they are the same). Put 2.20/I and 1.88/E valves and port these. Both of these heads have a 265cc intake runner and they respond very well with some cleaning up. I had .200 /.300 shaved from surface and intake shaved and port matched. These make great torque heads good for about 5,600 rpm. They will greatly outflow the peanut port.
Dual plane high rise manifold 800/850 holley. A decent set of used Stainless Marine manifolds will handle more power than you will be making and they don't leak.
Replace main/rod connectors with ARP. It looks like you need to keep in mind Velocity rather than volumetric flow. Look for a cam similar to 731 or the one Hardin uses with his package.. Good luck and don't get lost chasing 1,000 hp ideas/requirements/suggestions. My .02
You will find some great advice here on OSO from people that know a lot more than me, this is just a sketch of what I did and It surpassed my expectations.

I did research and then built a 454 like you have. I put on 292 casting heads. Much better than your peanut ports. 292 is a large oval port. I put heavier springs. A duel plane manifold for large oval port. A comp cams extreme marine hydraulic flat tapped cam. Biggest for wet exhaust. Roller rockers. Semituned cast iron exhaust. Went 10 mph faster. On a 242ss formula.

the peanut port head is not a good choice,as already mentioned the 049 or 781 head would be a much better choice.

Don't go with 088 heads on lower rpm builds, you are talking volume now instead of velocity. The 088 are suited better for high compression and high rpm. You said you were looking for torque at lower rpm. Also don't go with 2.25" intake valve again too much flow reduces velocity. Fierra gives a 40% discount for military/LEO/1st responders on valves and parts.
Oconner, I got me a 70 mph 242SS with this build.
Chris 302 has some good parts for your build, just not the heads (IMHO). Let me know if you want my cam specs as I had it made for me.
