how to determine if motor is worth supercharging

is there a good way to determine if motor is worth supercharging 454 carb motor
thanks in advance

Little more info on the engine. If you wanna make power without a hassle no reason not to. If it's time for a rebuild nows the time to decide so you don't do what I did changing directions mid stream.

Which 454 carb motor???

Baja Rooster 03-01-2019 07:05 PM

I would also rephrase the thinking to is the boat worth supercharging? You’ll most likely have to reinvent the fuel system, oil system, coupler, outdrive, etc.

22 donzi trs drive top half of motor done 25 hrs ago

getrdunn 03-01-2019 08:55 PM

What size blower you looking at and also what's current compression? You have the merctrans or bw c72? An inner cooled 177 you'd probably be fine if that's what your thinking.

cig20 03-01-2019 09:04 PM

was think a procharger m1 intercooled

phragle 03-01-2019 09:46 PM

1. What 454 ?? the 330 or the mag?
2. a 22 Donzi?? unless you have a blower laying around.... about 525 na hp and a bravo with a decent x dimension will get you moving pretty good.

cig20 03-02-2019 09:06 AM

motor is 1979 original to boat has approx. 350 hrs before top half redo
22 classic

Don't take a chance on blowing up the original engine, I would start fresh and build a 454 mag or 502 gen 6 both should have forged internals and wont break the bank .....jmo, their only original once.

dereknkathy 03-02-2019 09:34 AM

i pulled the orig 454 from a 79 Pantera. the hole the water pump attaches to was bigger than original and block was much thinner than others i had to compare to. mine was Hudson river 30 miles above new york. brackish water for 20 years and sitting for 15. any 40 year old raw water marine engine is too corroded internally to ever trust. where did this boat spend it's life?

dereknkathy 03-02-2019 09:38 AM

running and paid for, continue to use it, but i would not add 100 hp and similar increase in cyl pressure.

cig20 03-02-2019 01:24 PM

fresh water inland lakes its whole life

ph1971 03-02-2019 01:55 PM

You’re going to have it apart to open up the ring gaps no matter what, so you will learn what you have and don’t at that point. I say do it! If it’s cast internals and you blow it up, there isn’t much lost. I would wait until the end of the season though, ha.

you Should leave it stock i would say you can’t handle the extra horsepower

We have been infiltrated by vegan blow boaters again.......

sailtexas186548 03-03-2019 09:11 AM

Dam blow boaters!

SecondWind 03-03-2019 09:31 AM

The biggest problem with forced induction is that it makes a lot of power. If your current setup (engine/drive) is not built for the extra power you're going to start breaking things on a regular basis. Then instead of enjoying a day on the lake you're constantly chasing your tail on what did I break now. I'd keep your current boat as is and if you want something supercharged do your homework and buy a boat that someone else spent a ton of money and headaches dialing in. That's the best way to do it IMHO.

dereknkathy 03-03-2019 11:44 AM

but OP has a 22 Donzi. not easy to find. fast. holds it's value as well as anything. OP. I would start with the transom and a bravo setup. probably gain 5 to 10 mph with the same engine. then hydraulic steering.

what the? I've ran along a few years ago 80 mph or so. Just need right water conditions. No such thing as to much in offshore. Just need to respect it and others around you.

want to try to keep boat original 1 of only 30 made
love the trs shifts so smooth

dereknkathy 03-03-2019 06:05 PM

i guess you know the thread where the guy makes bravo shorties to fit the tr upper?

cig20 03-03-2019 07:21 PM

no any links

An amazing boat and certainly worth playing with. In my experience a fairly common opinion here, is to find another engine to drop in there and park the original one in the corner of the garage. It seems like Sick stringer has blower motors overflowing out of his pockets.

After my experiences of trying to adapt performance parts onto stock engines I’d find a blower motor that someone else has laying around and sell any parts not needed on it to fund the pro charger purchase.

Theres no benefit to keeping old boats original wrto engines or drives. These are not like classic corvettes or mopars.
