From previous PM, he's looking for someone which can freshen the heads. I'm thinking it shouldn't be much harder then BBC valve job

AllDodge 03-09-2019 10:42 AM

Kind of thought someone would have some help for you, but guess not

Found a thread at River Daves which might be of help

I can tell you the area is in need of a reputable and qualified mechanic and builder.

SR24Dave 03-09-2019 05:48 PM

Thank you all for the info.
Ive talked to a single shop in MI. They seem like they know what there doing (said by someone who does not)
There around 13K with Dyno time, Ive just had to learn the hard way to at least ask around about cost prior to just pulling the trigger on a single est.
Thanks again!

SR24Dave 03-09-2019 06:59 PM

All Dodge,

THANK YOU! You hit it out of the park! I just found everything that I needed, and then some. Already have spoken with David and gave me the number for Power Boost in CA.
My Ilmor is going on a road trip! You just made my whole weekend, Thanks again for all of you help!

BUP 03-09-2019 08:30 PM

I gave you 2 good leads already

BUP 03-10-2019 02:03 PM

PM sent again. Anyways have to ask -- Your ecm was bad ?? I could have fixed that ecm for you so hopefully you did not buy new ? If you did, send me your bad ecm if you want to and to have a spare or sell it.. Just saying.

IMO sounds like alot money to get stuff done with your Ilmor. Are you saying 13 K for a top end job ? NO way if this is correct.

SR24Dave 03-10-2019 02:12 PM

I was told it was bad? After tossing parts and money at it all last year.
Then told ILMOR would re flash it.
Then told a new one was cheaper and ended up with a brand new one installed.
I told shop to save all old parts, so once I have it in hand ll send it your way!

Thank you, someone else that thinks 13k is a lot of money.

And.............yes, I was told "13K, drop boat off, they pull motor, do a Top end rebuild", dyno motor and reinstall motor in boat.

SR24Dave 03-10-2019 02:17 PM

As of last fall, prior to the last two week stay at the shop when new ECU was installed.
I still had the original problem, Boat would out of the blue start to act like it was running out of gas, backfiring and sputtering.
After New eco was installed, boat was hose tested and seemed to run fine I'm told.

No lake test yet. Due to cold weather setting in.

BUP 03-10-2019 02:19 PM

Send the whole darn boat my way - I can take care of all this. Including the fuel injectors - fuel rails and the rebuild and pulling and reinstalling the engine and any ecm issues.

SR24Dave 03-10-2019 02:29 PM

I'm just about ready to drop the insurance, take a piss on the ilmor, and sink it all to the bottom of Lake Michigan. And pay the IL DRN fine.
(Cheaper than a divorce, lol)

(In the Shop's defense, the problem comes when I have the boat and goes when they have it.)

Fuel pressure and or fuel delivery issue and THE FUEL INJECTORS.

Put a big block chevy in it and be done cheaper and everyone works on a big block chevy. Nothing wrong with a carb big block in a marine app either if one wants a cheaper build with less issues down the road.

SR24Dave 03-10-2019 02:53 PM

Im die hard Ford Truck if it has wheels,
but a big block Chevy is looking better and better!

Im not after huge power or super fast speeds. Im after it being reliable and trustworthy!

Where do I shop for a 600-650 hp BB Chevy, Naturally aspired, pump gas?

Don't think your going to find one to run on pump gas, or at lest 93 octane pump gas. I think the Ilmor are great motors but there are very few that can work on them as seen from River Daves Place. There are a few guys here that can build you a motor, but like all of them, with that kind of power from a BBC your into higher octane. Also need to refresh top end every 250 hours

You could make up to 800hp on a 9.8” deck height pump gas BBC naturally aspirated. 650 is easy. A merc racing 565 probably puts down 600 on a dyno.

I have two of them in a Formula that I’m considering parting out.
Didn’t want to part it out because it’s such a solid boat but nobody wants to pay even what the motors are worth so.........

Padraig 03-10-2019 07:58 PM

Why not send the motor to Ilmor?

Padraig

SR24Dave 03-10-2019 08:21 PM

I would have to have it removed, ship it there spend 20+K, still have it shipped back and re-installed.

SR24Dave 03-10-2019 08:26 PM

From what I can tell. It would be smarter to just re-power it at that point.
Parts all have a pretty long lead time.
And no one really can or wants to work on it in my area.
its truly like finding a needle in a hay stack, to find someone locally (under a 6 hr drive) just to to a top end refresh.

BUP 03-10-2019 09:13 PM

949 hp all NA running on pump gas and 91 at that and not a made up dyno numbers. If you build it how its going to be ran then its all possible to run on pump gas.

mike tkach 03-10-2019 09:14 PM

i have a brand new 540,630 hp-650 torque.dyno time only.6000.and i am in the chicago area.add in,it is a pump gas engine

mike tkach 03-12-2019 07:42 PM

sr dave, you should have jumped on this engine, too late as it sold today.

SR24Dave 03-13-2019 12:43 PM

Im sure that was a good deal, But I'm pretty sure I would still have to get a new transmission, and who hows what else.

Boat is being picked up Friday and going to an ILMOR dealer Friday.

I will post what the problem was once we figure it out, in case anyone else has same issue.
