Knock sensor needed?

I going through both motors and when I had the blocks honed and hot tanked the one knock sensor was destroyed removing it. Are they even needed in the 500EFI motors. If so will a regular GM BBC one work instead of the Mercury Racing one.

I would keep it. The 500EFI is a speed density system and has limited information to develop it's strategies, also removing it will most likely put it into "safe mode" and pull all of the timing out I don't know if they are standard GM knock sensors, but I would not be surprised if they are.

Yes, you need it. It helps control the timing. I wouldn't try and skimp on this. The wrong one could trash an engine.

From what I’m seeing there around 150 from mercruiser. Is there any after market that will work just the same for less?
