Bilge Paint
I have the engine out of my 99 Baja and thought it would be nice to paint the Bilge/Engine room. My first idea was to go with AwlGrip, but by the time I purchase the primer, paint, activators and reducers it is going to be over $500. Does anyone have any recommendations for a product that works? The bilge is white.
Thanks! Pete |
I did awlgrip brushable in mine and I think my total was $300-$350. You might shop around. The finish is sweet by the way. If you apply it with a roller you must brush it flat or it makes air bubbles. |
Rustolium white enamel , inexpensive and holds up, did my 33 Outlaw years ago
|
Yup. Engines hide most of the paintwork in the bilge anyway. And definately white. When doing headstand next to engine looking for that tool or part, you need all the light you can get.

I used rustoleum professional grade with valspar hardener. Very happy with the results |
Guys, Thanks for the replies. Did you apply the rustoleum with a brush, roller or spray? Did you Sand, Scuff, prime etc? Any advice on application methods would be greatly appreciated
|
Interlux Bilgekote is nice stuff too. Just did my Sunny 288 while motor was out. Apply it with a brush and/or roller.

Clean really well. Degrease. Sand/scuff. Clean again. Roll/brush paint on. Prep is 95% of paint work. Prepped right you’ll love it. Don’t prep right it’ll be a mess. |
A little trick with Rustoleum, if you thin it a little with Acetone, it will flatten out real well and look great. I have been using Rustoleum for a lot of projects lately, I've sprayed it and brushed it and the finishes are amazing when you cut it.

I have used rustoleum with hardner on 2 seperate boats with good results
|
Professional white rustoleum and valspar hardner. Excellent results and lower price!! I have used awl grip and Bilgekote in the past wasn’t as happy. Prep is key! Good luck |

I did interlux Bilge coat in the Fountain about 3 years ago. Holding up great

I have used rustoleum with Valspar enamel hardener (you must use that hardener) for almost a decade now. The stuff is great, cheap and easy to find. If you want the off-white fiberglass color in a lot of boats just mix 3qts of white with a qt of their almond. Another thing, the cans of spray paint at depot matches the gallon perfect. Make touch ups easier.
Only one draw back, If you mix the Rustoleum with the hardener you MUST NOT SPRAY IT unless you have a full body suit and a fresh air supply. There is something in the hardener that when sprayed can kill you if inhaled and can even be absorbed through the skin. It only applies to spraying. |

i used rust oluem high performance paint..ised years agohttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c0a3632773.jpg glass work done by dave goodmen |
I used Rustoleum with Valspar enamel hardener as well.. Brushed on..
The brush strokes all but disappeared and the paint has held up GREAT ! Excellent budget friendly option... |
Rustoluem professional (alkyld enamel paint) with some dissociate hardener (like the valspar tractor stuff) is pretty tough stuff, just be wary of fumes, especially if you try and spray it, It'll kill you dead... The other option that was surprisingly inexpensive the past time I did it is to use the old ,standard imron and brush it on... it's tough as nails and I want to say it was inexpensive compared to awlgrip (polyester urethane) or the other newer acrylic urethane based paints... it's holding up very well...

My bilge is yellow and need to hit a few spots. Can I go to the autoparts store and have them do a color match?
