Cleaning a boat cover

Minor Q: I have a custom fit cover that was quite expensive. Has a bunch of dirt and oil on it and I would like to scrub it / clean it. It's gray canvas. Before I ruin it or discolor it, what is everyone using to get stains out of their covers, get off the grime and grease and oil?

Laundry Detergent? Dish soap?

Thanks.

We used Marine 31 on cover and it worked great

I would try Simple Green and spray it on with a pump garden sprayer. Hang it on fence and do half at time. Use a scrub brush on stained areas.
After its dry, use Starbrite waterproofer sprayed on with the garden sprayer.

I've always used TOTALLY AWESOME from the dollar store. Works great!

I took mine to a place with large washing machines and dropped it off. They washed, dried, folded and bagged it. It looks brand new and cost me $60.00. This was for a 28ft boat cover.

it will shrink and you will have to wet it to get it back on!

If it is made from Sunbrella fabric go to their website for washing instructions.

What about re-coating a cover that is custom made? I have a 1996 Four Winns U17 with a custom made cover. I had every seam in the cover re-sewn. It's red and the color is somewhat faded and I would like to restore it. Thanks

You can't really "un fade" it. Spraying it with the Starbrite waterproofer will bring back a very slight amount of color.
