Hydraulic Power Steering Help
Hi Guys,
I have a Checkmate 251 that I'm building a ~700hp 511CI BBC for. I don't think the OEM Merc steering system is going to be up for the abuse, so I'm trying to convert to hydraulic steering. I've purchased a set of Hynautic steering rams and now I'm looking to buy the rest of the steering system. I've seen many SeaStar helms on Ebay so I was thinking that they may be a good option. My question: Can I use a SeaStar helm in conjunction with the OEM Merc power steering pump and Hynautic rams? If so, Which ports do I plumb to on the helm? I'm having trouble finding a good schematic. If this won't work, I'm looking for other recommendations. Please keep in mind that I'm on a small budget. thanks for your help, Jaystew324 |
Google (hydrostatic steering unit ) the is how it works and look at mayfair steering parts you will get your head round it . 4x4 sites simplify it

Go to hardin marine and buy an "inside hydraulic kit" I know you are on a budget but steering is not something you want to cheap out on man. That thing will hook, spin, and flip before you can say "What the f*ck just happened?!!"

Aren't some hynautics low pressure ?

Seastar/hynautic helms are small displacement helms. They will physically work , but you will end up having about 15 turns lock to lock , which is useless on a high performance application. Good luck!!!
