Mild 454 question

Sooo motor is a .30 over 4 bolt main forged crank, cam, roller rockers, high rise torquer II manifold with a 750 Holley Aluminum exhaust manifolds. I don’t know spec on cam. How high should this thing rev? 24 Pantera TRS with a 21p prop. Seems WAY under propped to me. Also any thoughts on the torquer II? Seems like a high rpm manifold not much mid range. Any input appreciated been a wile since I had something other then a stock 454 mag lol

Cam and valvesprings has everything to do with what engine should / can be rev’d too. And what power potential engine had.

Torquer and Torquer II not a great low/mid/or high rpm intake. Was just a response to get an aftermarket intake to fit under a typical Corvette hood.

i would say with that setup not knowing the cam and springs.... 5000 rpms what are your rpms wide open and trimmed out? What model prop?

21eagle 06-11-2020 09:38 AM

It’s aluminum with pencil zincs, was freshwater boat. I’m salt so plan on changing it. What’s a good manifold to run?

21eagle 06-11-2020 09:39 AM

Haven’t dunked it yet, been going over everything I see I don’t like. Hopefully this weekend.

i found this quote "24 Pantera TRS mirage 23p said to be 400-425hp would flicker 70mph light fuel 1 person. Two people with fuel 68mph was the norm." I think the style would be a mirage plus 14. 5/8 ×23.
🤔

21eagle 06-11-2020 10:48 AM

That’s exactly what my thinking was, a 23 mirage plus. This 21p has to be screaming the motor.

SB 06-11-2020 11:21 AM

Could be correct for your set up but maybe not. Try yours and then some others, see what works best. Friends and loaner programs usually cheaper than buying props just to test.

21eagle 06-11-2020 12:30 PM

Yea definitely lol plenty of friends with props. Going to try a bunch this weekend. That’s why I was wondering how high to rev this motor.

Baja Rooster 06-11-2020 01:35 PM

The Edelbrock Air Gap is a tough manifold to beat. Check your drive ratio. It’s possible it has the 1.36 gears.

21eagle 06-11-2020 03:23 PM

You know that’s a solid point, I’ll check thank you!

Without knowing whats in it for cam and valvetrain, keep it under 5200. pull the oil cap and look at the rockers, are they regular stock stamped steel or do you have crane gold rollers??

F-2 Speedy 06-11-2020 04:05 PM

the motor is probably around 400 hp or a little more, Id prop it around 4800-4900 revs, what does the boat weigh ?

21eagle 06-11-2020 05:52 PM

Crane gold rollers

21eagle 06-11-2020 05:56 PM

24 Pantera trs older hull so little heavier idk 3500lbs ish sound right?

So somebody at some point put a little thought into the valve train, is it a mk1V, gen 5 or gen 6?? The timing cover will tell you...

21eagle 06-11-2020 09:57 PM

Motor was built by Bullet Marine in Ontario. I got it from way upstate NY on St Lawrence River. Fresh water for 99% of its like. Eat off the motor tranny and drive

21eagle 06-11-2020 10:00 PM

I know 4 bolt main forged crank cam heads gold roller rockers and performance springs. Spec on cam I don’t know. Aluminum exhaust manifolds imco risers

Baja Rooster 06-11-2020 10:29 PM

It sounds like someone planned on running hard, so you can do what the rest of us do - beat it hard until it breaks! If it doesn’t break then you’re golden and if it does then it’s time for bigger power anyways!

21eagle 06-11-2020 10:36 PM

Previous owner said put the sticks down and go all day I had it built for it lol. I’m just trying to dial it in. A big block reving over 5k I cringe lol unless I know it’s built for it. I have a call into builder like to know specs

oconnor marine 06-13-2020 05:56 AM

I think you can remove timing cover and get numbers off cam end. Then do a search....

Did you buy a boat set up with this engine in it? This is the setup that the guy that built the engine for this boat set up? Am I understanding this correctly? What RPM's is it running currently with this setup?

21eagle 06-13-2020 09:26 AM

Original owner did, guy that bought it from him was bush league mechanic at best. Luckily only had it 2 years.

21eagle 06-13-2020 09:32 AM

I just got in contact with original owner, he sent me the props he had for it. One on boat is not one he sold it with. 23p solid hub cleaver is what he had on it. It’s a 1.32 drive max rpm 5000. Now that makes more sense. Thank you for the help, dunking it tmw.
