steering cable replacement, how easy or hard is it

So I ruptured the steering cable housing by continuing to turn the wheel when my starboard motor died (which has the power steering pump) while docking. The cable busted through it near the steering wheel, I was able to get it back in and several hose clamps around the housing to stabilize it and continue boating that day. How difficult and what is the process for changing out this cable & housing? About 8 years ago my mechanic pulled the motor to change this cable when it started sticking. Im wondering if its possible without he motor in, I can see where the cable housing attaches at the transom (took the pic of it above). Would like to do it myself out on the lift if I can, boat is a cafe racer. |
It depends on your boat, how it is laid out and what is in the way that you would have to fight fishing hte replacement cable back through the boat.
9 times out of 10, the biggest fight is the lack of room on the hull side/transom where you have to pull the old cable out and get the new one back into the steering ram= without kinking, bending or damaging the cable in any way..... fishing it up to the helm, we always just secured a thin rope to the old cable as it was taken out that we could pull the new cable up through the boat in the same path as the old... snags are common. Again, re & re the cable at the transom is the b*tchy connection if there is no room at the transom. |
If your doing over 60 you should be running hydraulic anyway. Swapped mine from cable to full hydraulic, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Best thing is so much tighter at speed and easier to maneuver around the dock.
