Ignition system question.

I’m looking at pertronix ignition coils for my 496 stroker. I’m not an MSD fan as my experience has been less spark at higher rpm’s. My question is about ignition coil Ohms. Less ohms is lower resistance, I get that. I’m curious if there is a sweet spot for Ohm rating. I’m looking at the flame thrower III, 0.32 Ohms. Any advice? It’s a carb motor.

I'd just find a Merc Thunderbolt ignition in the swap shop. Reliable and plenty of juice for all of your needs.

Never use a coil with less ohms than the module is rated for.

Ex: The merc tbolt ign uses a pretty hot coil at .7 ohms. Do not use one lower than that or it will damage it.

Good advice. I appreciate the reply’s.

Same subject. Ie: ign energy needs. No need to use more than a .035” plug gap.

also consider the delco voyeger est system its cheap its reliable and its very hot parts are available at any auto parts store as they were common on gm cars and trucks

If you want more features, Daytona Sensors is the way to go. Completely digital timing curve with timing based idle speed control. I switched from MSD Marine to Daytona and it is worth every penny. My boat starts, runs like EFI but with a carburetor. I have a really big cam with 10.1:1 compression and it lopes pretty good but will idle all day at 700rpm. I run 93 octane, but if I have to get marina gas, I have a switch that retards timing 4 degrees. It wasn't that expensive either.

awesome I’ll look into it! What’s the lift and duration on your cam ?
