How to Remove Grease From Upholstery?
Did not notice I had grease on a rope. Well it stained my bench seat that I had reupholstered a few seasons ago.
So far: Let boat bling vinyl sauce sit on it and lightly scrub with a tooth brush several times. Let the cleaner sit on it over night and done the same thing. With the cleaner and it sitting in the sun for about 5 hours yesterday, a lot has came out. I’m letting dawn dish washing liquid sit on it now. I know not to use a magic eraser. Any other suggestions? Think the sun will eventually take it out or is it ruined? https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9b7c6cd82.jpeg |
I would stop putting anything chemicals on it at this point. It looks like the shiny finish is already partially rubbed off. Merc HP gear lube will stain similar to this. I've had stains from it and eventually the sun bleached it out, but it took a most of a Summer before it was gone completely.

Glade to hear the sun eventually should take it out! |
Did you try Simple Green?
|
For grease I use these. Won't dry out the upholstery either. (truth be told I use these for all kinds of stuff in the shop)

As Griff said above, let the sun do it's magic. I've seen it take out stuff I'd never thought would come out.

I haven’t tried simple green.
Star Brite done a good job in the past. I’m going to try that then the tub o towels. If that don’t work, I’ll let the Sun take care of it. Lake Cumberland Poker Run is less than 3 weeks away. I’d like to have the stains gone by then. |
GoJo works wonders...

Super Clean or Awesome from the dollar store works great.

My go to’s are simple green or chlorox spray. And leave in the sun for a day. My white vinyl comes out Snow White. But you need to put VLR, or some type of conditioner on it to get that shiny feel back. My stuff is ancient so I care about color over that.

Star Brite and Tub O’ Towels did not work. Hopefully the Sun will get it out.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. |
The last resort is acetone, with a quick wash and new conditioner on it rather quickly. The acetone takes out practically anything, but it melts the material while doing so. I managed to restore a boat interior that would otherwise go to trash.
Do try on a hidden sample somewhere and do use it as a last resort :). https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a91bb73533.jpg after https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...777cc9604d.jpg after https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...04a4768c2c.jpg before https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a6e93d4498.jpg before https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0bc92b42f7.jpg before |
The Awesome cleaner from the dollar store does do some great work...
but that stuff can be a lot harsher than what I would like to use on vinyl. I first used it heavily diluted to clean my siding, eaves, facias, and overhangs. Did a good job of cleaning and whitening them up, but if rubbed too hard, the while finish came off aluminum. Full strength would really peel some paint off. I have seen a LOT of different stains come out of my white vinyl seats from just an afternoon in beating down hot sun. Good luck |

Jbooten,
Westley's BleachWhite seems to do a good job on WHITE vinyl. Thanks. Brad. |

Mild soap or just regular all purpose cleaner will do the trick. Gentle scrubbing. Remember to lube up the vinyl after since youre taking all the oil out of it.

Sold boat. Problem solved. Thanks all for the replies.
