NEW ZR thread

Since the last thread turned into a Donzi bashing I'll start a new one.

Any new pics of some new 38 ZR's? I am very interested in one for next season, but I want to hear some feedback from someone besides Powerboat Magazine.

Please only post if you have information about the ZR's, not Donzi customer care.

The 35 ZR is an awesome boat, I have sold 5 of them and everyboat has performed over 90+ Mph the mid range is fantastic, I also had the pleasure of running a 38 ZR in 1000 Islands Poker run and all I can say Is Donzi did a great job on this boat, we started of almost last and by the time we got to the first card stop I caught up to the 1st group that was the 100mph group, we Ran 84 mph in fresh water and passed about 48 boats in the first group, then we started with the 100 group to the next stop and passed about 15 more, It wasn't the top speed it was how the boat performed that we moved to the front, This boat just loved the chop and rough water. No Chine walk and you felt secure.

Do we know how fast the 38 ZR non comp runs with 525's? Shanghied, what engines were in that 38?? Was it a sit down??

Re: NEW ZR thread

The 38 that Frank is talking about is running staggered 525's. It has electric stand up bolsters.

Thanks. I thought the 38 ran 90 with 525's and the 35 did 92-93. 84 seems slow. Am I missing something?

bluellama 08-28-2005 07:53 AM

Re: NEW ZR thread

We easily ran 84 all day long in the Poker Run, with 5 people, and a full fuel load, and I do know it is faster in salt water. I don't think Typhoon Performance Marine has had a 35 ZR that runs slower than 93 yet.
Check out www.donzi.net or this thread for more info http://www.donzi.net/forums/showthread.php?t=41437

Frank Civitano at Typhoon Performance Marine is the guy you wan't to talk to.

No Limits: The difference is running in fresh water you will loose 5 mph easy and depending on humidty, weight and fuel aboard. When we ran the boat we passed at least 45 boats and were now running with the 100 mph club. The 38 ZR has to be the best boat I have ever been in and believe me I have tested and drove a lot of boats. If you take a look at the Speedo below we did coming back from the last card stop get 90 out of the boat and we had a blast.

I own a 38ZR, it is Hull number 6 with staggered 525's and 5 blade hering props. The best speed I got was 89 in salt water then 88 in fresh water. I only have 2 complaints about the boat. Donzi still has not come out with their windshield. The screen they have now is OK but needs to provide a little more protection. The other issue is planing. Maybe I'm not used to the high x dimension, but the 5 blade herings do not pop the boat out of the water. Other than that, it is a great running boat, flies flat, no chine walking and great looks. The 525's look and sound great!, I love the boat

Re: NEW ZR thread

The windshield did seem low to me. The planning on all these boats seems to take time. I always figure it's the difference between small and large etc.

If the boat is running in the upper 80's that seems pretty good with 525's. I guess that's the state of the art at this time for V-hulls. At some point you have to pull the trigger because next years will always be a bit better. I do like the reality that this hull is one of the latest out.

Do the ITS boxes do much and is it worth the extra 15k???? If the dealer in my area is light on stock (one 35) can one go out of state? I know with Fountain that seems to be a taboo.....

Lime Disease. Do you have ITS boxes? being she is staggered you have to treat her like a race boat come up slowly with the trottles to about 2500 RPMs once you here the motors start winding out pull back little let the boat catch then throttle up she will plane out faster. This takes a little getting use to all staggereds with Hearings will do that. If you switch the props to Maximas you will plane out a lot better but loose top end (Not worth it) If you are not ITS you may need another vent in the back to break the boat loose. The ZR hull is so efficent she stays glued to the water, as far as the windshield just got a 35 ZR in stock with the new raised windshield

I would not buy the boat unless it was ITS, The difference is unreal The Its is much easier to plane off. Also at top end without ITS the boat has a little dolphin affect with ITS the boat doesn't move. I just ran 1000 Islands Poker Run with our 38ZR and I started off almost last in the 60-80 mph class by the time we hit the first card stop I passed 45 boats and caught up to the 100 mph club. At any point I could have let go of the steering wheel thats how stable the boat is, we rocketed passed some big Iron and not once chine walked, pitched or felt the boat was out of control. I have driven a lot of Performance Boats in the 38 size and I have got to say this is one of the best boats i ever had the pleasure of driving; Even Poker Runs America complimented me and said every picture they took of me was your boat was rock solid and really looked like you handled her well.

Re: NEW ZR thread

My boat has standard Bravo XR's, we did ventilate the hull in front of each drive about halfway back on the transom notch. It helped a little but not significantly. Supposedly Merc is coming out with a 5 blade that will plane better than the herings and not sacrifice top end, we'll see. If T was ordering the boat again, I would include the ITS system.

Shanghied,

That's the same windshield I have on the 38ZR, according to the factory guys, they are still trrying to finalize a winshield that comes up higher and wraps around the sides. Are you a dealer?

Shanghied Again 08-31-2005 08:48 PM

Re: NEW ZR thread

Hi Mark. Yes I am a dealer in NJ and a Donzi owner before I sold boats. The windsreen height has been changed from a 3" screen to a 5" screen, Tomorow I will take a close up pick of both windsreens. They are trying to make a windsreen that looks good on the boat and will not sacrafice aerodynamics and speed. Actually the way I drive the boat the windsreen dosn't bother me at all heck after driving a Spectre Cat with out a windsreen at over 100 mph I guess nothing will.

Just talked with Donzi and yes they are working on an optional windscreen for the ZR, they just want it to look great and get the right match for the boat.

Re: NEW ZR thread

what does the 38 zr comp run with 525 in it in the standard setup and what is the advantage in the 38 to running a staggared setup is it just handling ?? or some speed and ride quality ??

MikaylaHunterCig 09-03-2005 09:00 PM

Re: NEW ZR thread

On the high end Ken Bowen says his race boat (team Adrenaline) has ran 104 or so with Herring props etc..
Form what i have heard the 525 boats staggered should run about 90-93
My 500 side by side comp will run 86 or so (Donzi say's 89)
Staggered setup is closer drive line = less resistance= more mile per hour. Side by side easier docking maneuverability and down about 2 mph"according to Donzi"

Re: NEW ZR thread

does the side by side boat still run as flat in the water and how does the boat handle rough water??

I just ran the boat at 1000 Islands Poker Run, Yes she runs just as flat as the ZR competition. I started off 4th boat to last in the 60-80 mile an hour class. I didn't want to beat up on a new boat. With 5 people aboard we moved from behind and passed 45 boats. I was surprised how the boat did not chine walk or get pulled into other boats wakes as we were passing them, she did not get tossed or ever gave me an un easy feeling on loosing control, I have drove a lot of boats being in the boat industry and this has to be one of the best running boats out there.

Re: NEW ZR thread

You also have to take in mind when a boat is tested, they run min fuel and also run in the Gulf, The more saltwater you have the boat will be that much lighter on top. I have had our 38 ZR 1/4 Tank in Barnegat Bay at 90 mph with 525s Staggered, In Fresh water at 85 mph and with a Full Tank 2000lbs more at 86mph In Saltwater. Still fast for a stock 38ft boat that is stable.

Re: NEW ZR thread

Donzi has always made one hell of of a boat. my wife and I had a 1976 sweet 16 with a 350 and a Volvo 260 drive . This was a Chris craft conversion. We had the boat 17 years and beet it to death. Tried to beet it to death ,It ran 65 mph and never touched the motor or the drive. It had a mallory duel point dist. and it liked to eat points, but I would bet it has more hrs than any boat around. Now we have a 35 fountain but keep looking at the Donzi's.

I really think Donzi hit the nail on the head with the new ZR series. I really like the boat in post #11. We have a couple of 38ZX that run in the Chi-town powerboat club and they ride awesome.

Re: NEW ZR thread

salt water is NOT always faster...as the hull becomes more buoyant due to increased density, anything in the water will have increased drag as well.

Re: NEW ZR thread

will they put a cabin in the sit down/competition version.......???
that would be cool......real cool

Re: NEW ZR thread

i think they'll do it, but you have to drop into it through one of the hatches......

hpoffshore 09-20-2005 10:20 AM

Re: NEW ZR thread

Yeah, they'll do carpet/upholstry, head-liner, porta-potti, seating....but you do go "thru-the-hatch".
