350 mags or Scorpion 377 motors
I have been looking into the 28 zx, am looking for a boat with speed and dependability. Just wondering if anyone can tell me how dependable the Scorpion motors are, are there any common problems with these motors.

They are great motors I have heard no problems with them...if you can find a nice 28ZX with scorpion motors go for it you will love the boat....
Undertaker:D:D PS They do require 91 octane fuel..... |
Thanks for the input undertaker, I am glad u mentioned the 91 octane that makes a big difference, it is hard to find on the water

any 28's out there with the scorpions other than on boattrader?

I wouldn't pay TOO much of a premium for any Scorpion powered 28ZX boat, just because of the power...they look great and run very well, but the performance isn't all that much greater. The biggest power difference is at high rpm. The Scorpions ran a 1.65:1 Bravo to get the motor into it's power band.

And the different gear ratio does a GREAT job of that.. Makes the boat oh so much fun, and confuses all the big block mentality folks.. :) :)

I used to own a 28 ZX Scorpion. You should make a careful comparison between Scorpion boats and 350s, because the Donzi Scorpion ZX is an upgrade package. One of the items included with the Scorpion package was K-Planes (optional on the 350 boat). There were 4 or 5 other options that came with the Scorpion package, but I can't remember what they all were. I believe another was the bolster rear seat. The bottom line is some of the extra $ for the Scorpions was because of other upgrades on the basic boat, so make sure you compare apples to apples. I'll look around and see if I can find the catalog from when I bought mine. If I find it, I'll post the ther options that were included. Here's the spec sheet for the Scorpion.

I would think that with the added compression of the scorpion engines and the extra horsepower that it would not last as long as a 350 mag. Just my .02.

My neighbor as 2001 28 XR Scorion with the 377's... do you know what year they started the 1:65 drives? His boat came with a replacement B1 on the port, marked as 1:1.50, He can't get the same RPMs as with the original stbd side. Tony @ Donzi Cust. Service, couldn't find the spec sheet on his specific hull, but said similar boats had 1:1.50 B1's. He's running the 25p Mirages. Max rpm is only 4500 port, vs. 5000 stbd. Max speed is 75 with a lot of chine walking as soon as the tachs show the rpm difference at WOT. Carder |
need some input here...
... Does anyone know what the gear ratio is on his boat? Carder |
