Hi All,

Super excited to be the owner of a 2002 38ZX. Spent the last 3 days traveling to FL and back to pick her up.

55 hours
2550 miles
1 blowout
2 new tires
236 gallons of fuel

And she's back to MI!

Sweet boat! Tell us about the trailer...did it have ANY tongue weight?

woody81 07-01-2013 07:09 PM

Love the Donzi! Yes, it needs to be about 4 feet further forward on the trailer

Wilks 07-01-2013 08:53 PM

is that truck gas or diesel?
Nice boat. Looks like Chris took good care of it.

VoodooRob 07-01-2013 09:13 PM

Nice boat, looks in nice shape. Hate to say it but trailer looks like you need to get something else to get some support under that transom. Liken it to standing on the end of a diving board as opposed to standing at the beginning where the support is.

JcookMI 07-02-2013 07:16 AM

Hi All,

tnc110 - yes, plenty of tongue weights actually. Custom load master trailer has a good weight distribution.

woody 81 - worked well where it is ever at 70mph. Remember it probably wights 13,000 lbs.

Wilks - Gas 2500HD, I was surprised at how well it did. No issues.

First repair last night, successfully changed the impeller on the starboard engine. Only a few bloody knuckles and 2 hours later I was done.

Where you got it slipped at? I'm up in Holland with my lil 22zx...been thinking of upgrading wouldn't mind checking that out!

JcookMI 07-19-2013 08:01 AM

South Haven, Of course. I'm out there almost every weekend.

Congratulations, nice boat! I have recently been looking at a few Donzies but don't know a whole lot about them. Can you tell me what motors are in your boat and how much room is in front of the motor to work on it. I refuse to buy a boat in which you can't take out the back seat and have to stand on your head to work on the motors.

JcookMI 07-22-2013 07:19 AM

twin 502EFI's

There's about 1ft infront of motors to work on. There's about 2 feet on the outside port/starboard side of the motors.
You surely can stand in the engine compartment, but taking out the seat isn't an option.

Nice boat, and I love seeing that a 2500HD Gas towed it home that means my 2500HD Duramax should be fine. Been looking for a 38ZX also. What kind of top end you get with the 502's? 415hp each?

JcookMI 07-29-2013 07:12 AM

Hey s022mag!

Yea the 2500 did just fine, no issues.
Twin 502's with over 400hrs I'm anticipating they're only only putting out 400ish vs the stock 470.
Full tank of gas, with 4 ppl, I've hit 68mph. Running 26p props as well, which probably should be 28p.

If you're ever interested, i'd be happy to show you mine. I'm always interested in offers.

Thanks
Josh

What mileage did you get?

JcookMI 07-30-2013 07:20 AM

Roughly 8-9 mpg doing 65-70mph

Awesome Boat!

Double check the trailer because it looks like the boat is about 2' too far back.
I have a Loadmaster under my Donzi and it is a great trailer but had to play with the bow stop to set it perfect.
I have never seen one where there is that much distance from the hitch to the bow stop and also the rear bunks should extend just past the transom.
My 38 ZrComp weighs less than 10,000lbs and it makes my 3500 Silverado drop 6" when hooked up, looks like your truck barely squatted at all.
It is one of the best trailers I ever pulled.

I guess it is ok then. I know my boat and the Zr's are much different but I didn't know they were that different.

This is not a great shot but you see my second step is over the front set of wheels where the Zx is over the back set of wheels.

Dukedonzi 08-01-2013 04:27 PM

My 28zx had the same trailer as you guys when I bought it, first thing I did is got rid of it and put a loadmaster (other brands are good too) under it. It makes an AMAZING difference in trailering the boat, loading and unloading the boat is so simple now... no snapped winch straps. ETC.

I'm not knocking what anyone has and you guys have MUCH bigger and most likely better boats than I do, don't think I am knocking them, but I have had very bad luck with those trailers (I had one under my 34' Scarab and one under my Donzi). I have snapped axels, broken winches, straps, and even had the trailer scratch the F**K out of one of my boats because it floated out from under the boat.

Don't get me wrong, you go out spend a BIG chunk of money on your new toy the last thing you want to do, or in my case can afford to do is dump another 10 grand into another trailer but that is exactly what I did. Both your boats are awesome, they look great, BTW I really like the yellow, but sooner or later those trailers are going to give you trouble. What good is the boat if you can't get it to the water.
I'm not knocking the Aluminum part of the trailer, its the design that's bad.

Tom, you have a first class set-up.

Thanks for the compliment.
Reality is the truck is a 2001 and the boat and trailer are 2003.
I have a Loadmaster (I think theirs is as well). Upkeep and proper set up is the key. When I bought the boat in 2007, I had the tower and t-top guy at my marina make the steps on the tongue for me. Best trailer addition ever! I was thinking of "upgrading" the trailer to a Myco or similar over the winter but after we rebuilt it and made it like brand new again, I kept it. It trailers even better than last year when those pics were taken.

I had a couple covers made for the spares to protect them and it gives it a nice touch.

Sorry for the hijack! Back to your beautiful 38Zx! Welcome to the Donzi Family!!!!!!!!!
