33zx looking for help with some questions

Ok guys new here so take it easy on me... looked at a 99 33zx. . My wife fell in love with the boat. But it has some issues. . Guy bought it brand new in 99 put pro chargers on it.. long story short blew 3 motors before took them off. Now just the blue 500 motors in it. No receipts of what was done. Pics have drive showers. In person no drive showers. . Said they took them off didn't think they needed them. Is it worth the risk with something that has had this many issues? Thanks

tnc110 09-10-2015 11:03 PM

That all depends on the price.

Missing drive showers isn't worth changing a decision over.

Brad419 09-10-2015 11:52 PM

49,000

I payed 55k for my 2000 in 2012 and put 20k into the motors. Have a survey done on the hull and motors and if all is good go for it u will love the boat. We love ours.

That's a nice lookin boat.

If either of the boats have hp 500's or efi's and have around 300 hours on them and top ends haven't been touched they will need to be done. And looking at around 6K to have someone else do it and that's if nothing else is broken. I had 345 hours when I got mine and ran it for one summer and then went to get them done. And in that one summer I broke a lifter and twisted a shaft.

It's clean but no one can tell me how many hours are on these rebuilds.. he had prochargers on them.blew 3 engines then took them off. The boat shows 467 hours. But know one can tell me how many since he took prochargers off with these rebuilds

The other one I'm looking at has 240 hours.

Witch boat has more features that you and the wife like? Things like heat and air, vac flush toilet, hot and cold water and paint. The paint and the bigger motors where what made up my mind on the two I was looking at. Both had air but the one I didn't get had hot war and vac flush system so I gave that up for the one that was more appealing to us.

2003, 496 HO's Bravo X drives, shore power, halon, stereo 8 speaker 1 sub with amp, sit down private head with sink and shower hose/deck drain. Cuddy has sink also, transom shower, power bolsters and foot rests, stereo helm remote, halon, merc lab 26p props, new cables for kplanes, trim in throttles, ding in rub rail from fork driver, marina will replace, just been waiting on winter. tri axle trailer, only 500 miles on it, has sat since 2005 when I started dry storage, it needs bunk carpet, I have 2 rolls with a mag rim matching spare, it was $10K comes with boat. One scratch port side, hard to see I touched it up, lathem steering, custom steering wheel, GPS speedo, comes with Garmin GPS which lately has been ok, out dated and needs replaced, I plan to buy the Garmin 547, dual batteries/switches, batteries are the expensive blue cells, they are 4 years old. Cockpit cover, booat is safe with all gear. flares etc, matching Life Line Donzi life jackets ($700 value), A good boat, I rate my boat an honest 8.5 all day long. 240 original hours. Hoping for 80k for the package, I owe 90k, I can't deliver, sold my 350 when I retired. 5'10" headroom in cuddy, refrigerator, 30 gallon fresh water hold, head is pump out no maserator. I have a bad back so bildge is a little dirty, I don't sweat it and hose it out a couple times a year. maintenance records etc. 240ish hours all original, big items like plugs and anti freeze always done etc. I think that is about it.. this is my buddy's 03. He said there is no air but rigged for it. So would I just have to buy a unit and connect it?

1989mach1 09-13-2015 11:07 AM

So witch one of the two do u and the wife like better. That would be the one I would go for. But still have the one u want checked out before u make the move. Good luck u will like eather one

Thanks ... honestly we like them both. So we will see... hope to see you out on the lake next year. We will probably be hitting up Kelly's put in bay and cedar point I'm sure.

I looked at the black and red one a few years ago. Very nice boat! only down side is no trailer and no AC. I think 49k is a pretty decent deal for it. I think the red white and blue one has 496ho's. Just my 2 cents but I think the 33zx needs at least 500's. Its just too heavy for 502 mags or 496ho's.I have the original sales literature for my 2000 and the Kevlar Daytona edition which I have is listed as 9875 lbs dry. The regular zx is listed as 10675 lbs dry if I remember right.Just too heavy for anything less than 500's. Sounds like you guys are both from up around Sandusky. Which ever zx you end up with you will love it. We should meet up next season with 1989mach1 and all do Kelly's or Put in bay!

Brad419 09-13-2015 02:06 PM

That sounds great would be fun .. we are from Sylvania by toledo.. . Like I said I like the black and red one. Wish it had air. Bother have vacuflush. . But no one can answer the questions about the boat. The sales guy at Brenner seemed like a idiot. I tried to get him to get the owner to call me directly and he said he is to busy.. so I guess he dosent want to sell his boat then.. all I want is documents on what was done to motors and boat since he bought it new in 99 he should know.

1989mach1 09-13-2015 04:07 PM

Tell him if u can't get me the info I want on the boat I will give u 35k at most and see what he says. It will be sweet to see another 33 at ki next summer hope all works out for you.we dc on do pib but we r at Kelleys a lot

tnc110 09-13-2015 04:39 PM

Both are great looking boats. Even though the 496 boat won't be the fastest, it will be a safer bet and much more reliable. all boilsdowntowhat is important to you.

Powerquest230 09-13-2015 04:52 PM

Unfortunately unless given documentation showing otherwise I'd go on safe side and consider the power as unknown hour engines with a life including boost. In other words plan on rebuilding and be pleasantly surprised if they last a few years. Good looking boats with room for amenities- may be my next step in growing up.

Brad419 09-13-2015 05:57 PM

Thanks guys... anyone know what hours the 496 need rebuilt? I heard they can run for a while from what I read. .. it only has 240

I would say that is about right.

As far as the rebuild schedule, there are too many variables to answer that question accurately. But for the most part black engines are very reliable. It's not uncommon for them to last well past 500 hours.

c_deezy 09-13-2015 07:33 PM

I used to rack store at Pier 75, did it for about 6 years off and on and spent a lot of time down there. I can just about count on one hand how many times I saw that Donzi out. The guy that owns the marina owns the boat, last I knew. The steps were all fukked up from the forks on the forklift hitting them when racking the boat, which you can see in your pics they still are. It also sat in the water most of one summer at Harrison's (same owner owns both marinas), can't remember the reason for that, there was plenty of room at Pier 75.

Personally, I would pass on it. The other one looks alot better in my opinion.

Brad419 09-13-2015 07:43 PM

Yes you are right it is the owner of both marina. Sounds like there is just to much going on with that one.. I'm gonna pass.. just sad that they can't produce what I want. But sounds like I will be better off going with my buddy's. . Just way farther away to get it. But it definitely sounds like a better deal.. just a little more than I wanted to spend. But oh well only live once. Thanks guys.

1989mach1 09-13-2015 10:28 PM

Its always more then what you want to spend....

dandercam1 09-14-2015 07:14 AM

No doubt the red white and blue zx looks nice but 80k?.... I think you could get one with 525 efi's for that money. And I would say 74 mph is about best case with 496 ho's. On the plus side I've seen 496 ho's go well past 1000 hrs without ever having the valve covers off

tnc110 09-14-2015 07:22 AM

80k does seem a bit high, especially if he is a friend. But, if he is a god friend and is being 100% honest with everything and that the boat is in tip top shape...it might be worth paying a little extra for piece of mind. There are a lot of boats out there with gremlins that you wouldn't discover until it was too late.

dandercam1 09-14-2015 07:25 AM

I did talk to the owner of the red and black zx about the motors and he told me they where completely redone after a procharger scattered at 150 hrs. At that time the boat had 450 hrs so there was about 300 on the rebuilt motors. He didn't have any paperwork but gave me a name of the engine builder (cant remember his name) said I could call and talk to him if I wanted. There was some glass damage to one of the corners of the hull steps if I remember right but looking closer at it I remember thinking it was more cosmetic than anything. The running surface was in real nice condition. Also the owner bought the boat new from a dealer up there with the pro charges already installed.

just out of curiosity why did you pass on it? We have looked at it twice I think i could get it for low 40s. Which is a lot less than the other one. But I'm gonna need a trailer so there is probably another 7. So I just don't know.

Brad419 09-23-2015 10:10 AM

Also how hard is it to install air on one of these if it doesn't have it.. the red white and blue one does not have air but said it rigged for it? Which does not make sense to me.

dandercam1 09-24-2015 03:11 PM

I passed because it didn't have ac or a trailer. . I priced a new myco trailer and couldn't justify the cost. I was going to trade him straight up for a Donzi cruiser I owned at the time and the high price of a trailer plus the cost of adding ac made the deal not so straight up.

1989mach1 09-24-2015 07:12 PM

From looking at the pic of the boat on page one. It looks like it is not even close to being rigged for air. Maybe just the power is to the v birth and a braker in the panel. There is no outlet up on the starboard side where the water cycles out of the unit. So that leaves me to believe that there is no inlet to a sea strainer in the engine compartment eather. That means running all the lines through the boat.

1989mach1 09-24-2015 07:16 PM

U can see it on mine at the bottom of the blue line under the red in these pics

Brad419,
Did you ever decide on which 33 ZX to purchase?
