Does anyone know anyone who repowered a 28ZX with twin bug blocks?

Marginmn 05-09-2017 09:14 AM

Are the single engine ZXO's as desirable as the twins? Pro's and cons?

StewLow 05-09-2017 09:19 AM

I have twin 350 mags now. And would go to twin big blocks.

I think in a boat that size almost everyone would prefer twins for maneuvering. But then again there are some guys that love singles in big boats, like the single 32 Dominators are a prized boat.

Congrats on the new boat. Looks awesome. Those ZXOs are fantastic.

I think 28zx's are really too small for offshore running (not that it can't be done) so really only a single is needed and MOST of the time 1 engine/drive are cheaper to maintain than 2, but twins are nice for around the dock.

As for big blocks, good luck stuffing those into the already cramped engine bay with sbc. I've seen a lot of 28zx's, never see any twin big block combos. If you're looking for increased performance, I'd add the prochargers or whipples. You'll run out of hull before power.

Single 496 HO performance might disappoint. I've heard high 50's. Im guessing you'd need a lot of power and a drive upgrade to see the same speed as twin small block boat.

twin 350's will get you in the low 70's, 377's close to 80...but this hull likes mid 70's, anything faster and she'll chime walk. IMO, don't waste your money on power to get a 28' over 100 when you can't really enjoy it unless you're on the calmest lake (forget ocean) at 6am, buy the bigger boat with that money and enjoy it all day at 70-75. if you're looking single engine, look at a 525 supercharged or something comp. i doubt a 490 ho or 525 will push you up to 70 and you'll need an XR drive or comp.

Look forward to it!
