26 zx
How does a 26ZX handle more power and speed. I'm thinking of tweaking mine. I had a Velocity 26" 260 that was 720 HP with a B-Max and it drove great just around 95 GPS. I know this boat is heavier and stepped VS pad. Just wondering who has had experience with these or if I should find a different hull to play with.

Nobody has done mods on one?

Seeing as you are not getting any answers..........you'll just have to go back to a Velocity. LOL

Closest my brain can remember is all the mods member Blackbaja had done to his 27ZX. He stopped posting this year for some reason, but you can look up his posts (he has a lot of them not related to his boat) and thumb thru to find more info by clicking: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...earchid=125624
Don't know if it will help - not sure how different the 26 is vs the 27. But it's something. LOL. |
I had a 1999 26zx with the stock 502. When I was thinking about it I found a lot of owners saying that you had to have balls of steel to drive them through the chine walk over 80. One guy had a setup that went close to or over 100mph. It was a consistent feeling that if you had the nerve and the power it can be done but it is a handful.
At 72 mph mine would walk all over with anything but glass conditions. Great boats and I do miss the extra width of the larger beam. |
There was one advertised a few months ago in Europe with a 525 Merc racing engine. I think it was an '06 model, all orange and yellow, looked pretty nice and I think the ad said mid 80's (for what that's worth).

Thanks for the replies. I have also heard some of this about them getting squirrely around 80. It's a stock 502 now an it runs around 68 GPS. I love the ride, looks, and creature comforts but I would like the additional speed again. Maybe time to do a little shopping.

Here's the one I mentioned with the 525.

Like others have said, 75-78 starts chime walking and can be a little scary. I have a 28 with twins and it's a real handful in the 80's. Haven't touched 90 yet, will give it a shot next week when we are at Lake Lanier. I think the 26-28zx's just like riding sub 80.

The running surfaces are very similar. The 26 is 26.5 and the 28 is 28. The handling will be better on the 28 because of it being twins and a little more weight in the back. Careful with the 26 I had mine hook a few times on me.

When I bought my 26zx a few years ago it had a M1 pro charger set up and ran right at 80 and pretty steady at that speed. But to get there the you had to drive through the chine walk at about 75, this seems to be the norm with this hull. Back to stock now it runs 71 to 73 and it's very happy with those speeds no ill handling. Plus my wife doesn't scream as much when it would chine walk.
