Classic 22 porpoise?

Hello, I owned a Z21 that porpoised and it drove me nuts unless the tabs and drive were completely down. I am considering purchasing a 22 classic and have read that the 22 also porpoises. Do any 22 classic owners experience this problem? Any help on this will be appreciated.

They do if propped wrong. A turbo or a Hydro settles them out real well. Still a bit touchy till you get used to them, but once you you figure out the sweet spots they fly.

Check www.donzi.net for info, and some fast 22's!

Mine left the water with every wave till I got a Turbo1 Prop. I was running a Mirage Plus and it was not working out to well. Now its just fine... Like they said prop it right or hold on.

What is a turbo 1 prop, who makes it,how much is it,and where can you find one?

Re: Classic 22 porpoise?

the turbo 1 is turbo propellers (turbo-props.com) mainstay 3 blade prop... many like it much more than the mirage, especially on the classics. the best prices around are from dan's discount propeller in the detroit area. he has a website, i believe it is dansdiscountprops.com or some variation of it.. do a google. search eh.

I drove a 22 classic yesterday that had a real porpoise problem. What is it about the TURBO Prop that makes the differance? Which pitch Turbo should be used? The boat has a 496 Mag ( 375HP). How about prop slippage, what could be causing that?

Re: Classic 22 porpoise?

I'd try hydromotive too, but you might give something in a 23 pitch for the
Turbo 1.

How about the 18 classic - does it porpoise?

I Personally am running 25p on a 18 classic 1999. No porpoising, but I on occasion can get a very slight chine around 70mph or so. I can walk & trim it out. To throw in my 2 cents on props, yes props can make a huge difference. Sometimes even brand to brand with the same pitch. Differences come in to play with the rake, cup & height of the props blades, not just the pitch. What may work fine on one boat or hull, may not work ok on another.. Jamie

I have an '05 22 Classic w/stock mirage plus. porpoising is a problem at lower speeds with passengers in the back seat. With 1 or 2 people in the boat the porpoising is easily stopped with the trim. I don't have to drop the tabs.

I have a 22' classic with a 502 and a Bravo 1. I switched from a Mirage Plus to a Turbo 1 and the porposing problem went away and picked up a couple of MPH. I put the Mirage back on just to see the difference and the porpoising returned. I think it's just the wrong prop for that boat.

From my experience w/ Dan's Prop, don't do business w/ him. Still fighting a cacellation fee of 40.00 when Turbo mistakenly sent me a used prop.
As in the quote, do busines w/ Poodle and at a better price and assurance of getting satisfaction with a quality product w/ no hassle. Dan's Prop is on my **** list.

Re: Classic 22 porpoise?

My 22 Classic with stock 502 and Bravo will porpoise below 3000rpm unless drive is all the way down, don't need any tabs. Use a 25" Mplus prop. After much research, I have heard a labbed 26" Bravo 1 prop is good as well as the Turbo 1.

Re: Classic 22 porpoise?

No experience yet, but I hear because I have a TRS with a tranny, that the cg moves forward and it won't tend to porpoise. Poodle???
