Donzi Quality

The Donzi 33ZX is on our list of (used) boats that we will be looking to upgrade to in the coming year.

I don’t think there’s any question that Donzi is a high quality boat but from some research it seems Donzi had a stretch of quality problems that have since been resolved.

Could anyone tell me what years, if in fact there were any, were the quality problem years?

Thanks

Re: Donzi Quality

The Donzi years I would stay away from are early 90's boats. If ya want a step hull boat go 2000 or newer.

I have a 2002 33ZX twin 496 HO's for sale at a great price, its a fresh water boat with all the toys. Let me know if you are interested. Here is a link with some more info and pics.

Anything in the last several years should be fine. Current company ownership is doing a good job.

So a 98-99 with stepped hull should be OK I pressume.
What type of speeds with a pair of 415-425 hp motors would be reasonable?
Thanks

Re: Donzi Quality

In my 2002 33ZX with twin 496 HO'S I get 74 MPH (speedo) all day long. If ya can go the extra cash I would step up in yr. to a 2000 or newer boat. They made some changes cosmetically and cabin space IMO is better in the 2000 and newer boats. plus you also get there Z Care warranty with the 2000 and newer boat. Mine still has three yrs. left. Give me a call would be glad to talk to you about my boat that is for sale. Cell # 484-614-7311.

Good luck

The Z care warranty is great to have. They've taken very good care of me, buying me 2 drives so far. Wouldn't want to boat without it!

We have a 2004 38 ZX and as far as quality, we couldn't be happier. We came from the Baja world (4) and there is no comparison. It is just right for us to spend the weekend out on the lake with the comforts of home. Just right for a couple and maybe two kids. We've had another couple stay with us for a 2 nights and it is tight, but do able. Good luck I don't think you will be unhappy at all.

I drove 300 miles to look at a new '01 33ZX yellow high roller w/500EFI's about 20 mos ago. The quality throughout was good...though I couldn't get past the print through in the layup. The Donzi ZX's have a couple of nice features that my Formula doesn't, but overall it didn't make the cut.

It's really just about final assembly, cabin uphostery, and layup...as everything else is outsourced anyway....McCleod for example.

Re: Donzi Quality

Quality issues were during the Dick Genth years of the mid to late 80s.
He destroyed Wellcraft then Chris Craft then Donzi's reputations as he milked each of these companies. With him out (and now dead) Donzi returned to the top of the heap.

Nordic Heat,
If your interested in a 32' (30' at waterline) Check out the Superboat Y2K. It's built stronger and better then a Donzi. Our last 3 customers were a Donzi owner and 2 Baha owners. Unlike a 32 Donzi, which goes 74mph with twin 496. You get 74mph with a single. Check out the thread from the last customer. And Superbabi (formerly Bahababi)

Rip,

you passed on a 33 with 500's for your 496 Das Bird boat? What were you thinkin'? If you weren't gonna go Donzi, you could've at least got a Fountain. The way you drive that thing we should've got you a 370SS.
FX,

When one 496 stops working, the guy with twins is still gonna get home. Nothing worse than the pictures of your boat as your buddy tows you in. How do you qualify that Superboat is built "stronger and better" than a Donzi? As an engineer, I find your terms humourous. The old "my dad can beat up yours" mentality. You must be in sales! :D

Gulf Coast Hatteras has a 2003 33ZX with 525's for sale. They have had it for over a year. I have personally looked at it and it is low hour and good shape. I bet a real offer of 130K would take it. Cabin met my wife's standards and she is picky about our boats (Formula's and Black Thunder). Good shopping.

Yep, them 32 Donzi's are just awesome. :D :D :D

And could someone (Rip) explain "print through in the layup" and it's affect on a boat that isn't gonna go over 35 mph anyhow? Wait a minute, it had 500s, fuel consumption higher, make that 30 mph. :evilb: :evilb:
On another note, any incriminating photos from boaters weekend? (or at least OSO uncensored material) :drink:  :drink:

5PM,

I'm not only a Fiberglass Specialist/Marine Surveyor, but I build Superboats. I've been in this business for over 30 years. I've repaired ans surveyed literally thousands of boats. So, believe me when I say, " I know glasswork". And no, I'm not in sales.

5 Pm, You Need To Relax, Rick ( Fx-1o) Is One Fine Boat Builder. I Know Rick He Would Never Trash A Fine Boat Like Donzi. His Point Was Nothing More Than A Suggestion For A Potential Onwer. I Have Many Donzi Onwer Friends, The Boats Are Nice. His Point Was Nothing More Than Look What Performance You Can Get Out Of A Single Engine Boat. I Am A Current Baja Onwer, Looking To Move Up . I Looked At Donzi, But, Superboat Hands Down Winner!!!!!!!!!!!!! And A True Custom Builder!!!! Hey Check Ricks Work Out. You Just Might Step Up To A Superboat Some Day. Remember Know YouR Builder, Not The Boat Store You Purchased From !!!!!! Good Luck

I just came across this posting from 27Sedan posted back on 12/29/2004. You obviously never knew Dick Genth and have no idea what you are talking about. I quess you have the right to your sick opinion. It's unfortunate that you never considered the feelings of the people who might read this, such as his friends family children and grandchildren. I hope that when you are dead that no one would express there opinion about you in such a degrading way for your loved ones to see. No doubt he was a much better person than you could ever hope to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dockrocker 08-07-2009 02:11 PM

I'd venture to say that a 33ZX and a 30 Superboat are likely appealing to two different types of owners. The ZX always struck me as more of a cross between a Black Thunder and a Formula - enough performance to be entertaining but plenty of creature comforts too.

Superboat is much more for the weekend warrior types that run WFO all day.

YMMV.
