VI SSM Disassembly

I cracked the gimbal rings on one of my #6 dry sump drives. I am attempting to take it apart so I can replace it, but I am having trouble removing the pivot pins that hold the trim asssembly in. I have removed the zinks, pulled out the four bolts underneath and tried tapping it out using a slide hammer on the stud in the center. So far, it hasn't budged. I'm afraid to beat on it any harder until I know I'm not going to destroy anything.

Anyone familiar with the problem?

Thanks,
J. Jay Forbes

You need a full service for that job. If you don't have all the proper tools, you are going to have a heck of a time getting it apart. And if you damage other parts, it gets very expensive. We are located on the east coast, send it over.

Those pins can be quite difficult to remove. I have used heat many times with success but if the gimbal ring is cracked your slide hammer can't do it's work because the broken ring is flexing and robbing the energy from slide hammer. A couple of times I have had to drill the bottom of the boss to split it and release pin. Not knowing your skill level or shop I must say, no offense but it may be a job for a shop. The retaining pin for the lower swivel pin is easy to break. The upper swivel pin is also easily damaged and very expensive. Hope your outer transom plate is okay. I can really appreciate a guy williing to work on his own boat. Good luck to you.
