Engine swap
I'm new to boating so please bear with me. I have a 1978 Sea Ray that had a cracked block so I found a newer engine to put in it.(1993 3.0L/LX) I got the engine in and aligned the coupler to the transom and started it up and I am getting a sound from the transom coupler area. The coupler that came with the engine has a shaft that slides in where the gimble bearing is. The old engine had a coupler that was fllush with the bell housing so it didn't have that extended shaft. I'm thinking that the shaft that slid into the transom is what is making the noise. I was going to change the coupler before I put the engine in but the bolt pattern from the old engine to the newer was larger. Are these interchangeable and is that longer coupler supposed to go into the hole where the drive shaft connects. Looking from the outside in the shaft looks like it is butted to the gimbal bearing.

not sure but i dont think it should be up against the gimble bearing---need a coupler that will bolt to that engine and accept the driveshaft from the outdrive but also have a little space in between the bellhousing and the transom/gimble housing-----make sure its all aligned properly as well----good luck.
