Charging System Problems

Last few times out I've noticed a problem with my charging sysytem. Sometimes my volt meter will peg at 16 volts! Very erratic. It will be OK for a while and then jump to over 16 volts. I know the gauge is working because at night when this happens the lights get very bright. It is not the one wire alternator. What do you guys think? Time for a new one, can it be rebuilt, could it be something else. It is the original one on the boat from 1986.

Thanks, Dave

could have an internal regulator problem.

Ditto... internal regulator problem is your best bet. On some generators there is a "monitor wire" that goes to the electical system downstream from the alternator to monitor the voltage level. If that is shorted the regulator won't get a signal and could let the voltage go wild. This is not very likely. I think your regulator is toast.

OK, Thanks. I take it the regulator is inside the alternator. Is it replaceable or do I buy a new alternator.
Thanks, Dave

I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum!

On one of my boats I had a alt that had built in regulator. I think the regulator went bad. I was able to buy a new 1 wire alt. cheaper then getting a replacement regular. I changed alt. out, capped off the extra wires and worked perfect ever since.
