Is the Merc Velvet Drive tranny the same as a BW 72c?

The Mercury unit is not the same. The 72c is the better one.

The Mercury transmission most people call Merc trans, the Borg Warner is known as Velvet Drive trans.:D

Thanks guys, I have BW 71C or 72C behind my Merc 400 HP.

I looked at pics of both and clearly the BW is much bigger.

Check the tag on the tranny case. If it's stamped 10-18, you've got a 72C. If it's 10-17 its a 71

Also, the 72C is 15/16 longer than the 71

or red 71 and green 72

72 handles more HP
