Is the Merc Velvet Drive tranny the same as a BW 72c?

The Mercury unit is not the same. The 72c is the better one.

The Mercury transmission most people call Merc trans, the Borg Warner is known as Velvet Drive trans.

Thanks guys, I have BW 71C or 72C behind my Merc 400 HP.

I looked at pics of both and clearly the BW is much bigger.

Check the tag on the tranny case. If it's stamped 10-18, you've got a 72C. If it's 10-17 its a 71

Also, the 72C is 15/16 longer than the 71
