Slow shifting
 

I have a 91 Baja with twin big blocks and Bravo 1 drives. One of the drives is slow to go into gear when shifted. Does this in forward or reverse. Takes 3-4 seconds to go into gear while the other side goes in as soon as its shifted. Engines are idled at 750 rpm. Anyone have any ideas??? Thanks in advance.

My bravo was doing the same thing, did it for two days then the upper let loose. Brought it to the shop this week to find out the damage. Don't know exactly what it is, but mine was hesitating the same way. Not much help(I know:rolleyes:). Just though I'd let ya know.

I had a similar delay on Stbd side... slow to go into gear. The shifter cable was out of adjustment... that fixed it. Carder

teamTickfaw, if its doing it to both fwd and rev I would first check for loose linkage on shift plate at motor and check lower cable where it enters bellhousing at drive. If you trim out and turn wheel to port inspect cable at bellhousing. If the cable is coming apart at the brass swedged end you loose travel. It could be something else but check these easy things first.

Also how do I adjust the shifter cable and at what end, shifter or at outdrive ?

Carders shift was adjusted after his engines were out. During the exchange something must have moved. Generally no adjustment is needed, if the shifting has changed something is going away. Adjusting the cable is treating the symptom not the problem. Drives are expensive as you know. Good luck.

Jim's correct.. the symptom didn't appear until the engine was re-installed again. At that point when both shifters were put into neutral the stbd. was well ahead of the port on the shift pad. We unhooked that cable at the engine, then put the both shifters where we new neutral was on the port, and adjusted the cable to length at the engine end. Carder

Just went through the same thing, replaced the shifter cable and drive shifts like new again. This was on a 1989 Bravo, guess they are only good for about 15 years, not bad. Couldn't really see the damage until you compare the old one next to a new one.

Scarab28, when you say replaced the shifter cable, which one? The one coming from shifter or the one that goes into outdrive. Was yours acting the same as mine... slow to go into gear? Thanks for everyones help.

Mine started as banging in and out of gear when shifting, then it would be slow to go into reverse, then no reverse at all, then it wouldn't come out of gear. I drained the oil before I brought it to the shop and the drain plug had about 1/4" of metal and the oil was full of shavings. Not looking good for the home team:rolleyes:.

The cable going to the outdrive. Mine would go into reverse and neutral fine, but very slow to go into forward. Eventually it would not go into forward at all.
