Mechanical or Electric Trim Gauges
I am in the process of re wiring my scarab. It has TRS drives with mechanical trim gauges. Only one works and the other one doesn't move the entire length of the gauge. I am redesigning the dash and was thinking about putting in 2 1/16trim guages and doing away with the mechanical. Is this a good or bad idea? What are the pros and cons of each system? Are the electric trim senders prone to problems? I don't plan to run the boat in the ocean and it will probably stay on a trailer when not in use.
Thanks |
You may need to replace your cable and gauge which can be difficult.
If you install electric, you'll of course need to pull the wires, so it may be just as easy to pull the new cables by fastening the old cables to the new. It really depends on your rigging. If you need pricing on anything, let me know. Kirk [email protected] Gaffrig Performance Dealer |
Kirk,
My plan is to strip all wiring and engines from the boat this winter. If we assumed electrical or mechanical will be as easy as the other which is better overall, is one more problamatic then the other?, Is one more expensive then the other? Whats the general preference? |
If the trim indactor is only moving part of the way more then likely the cable is the cause. I had the same problem with my TRS equiped boat last year . The cable was sticking.

I currently have electric drive indicators on a twin bravo set up. My gauges are not next to each other so at hi speeds in rough water it is difficult to confirm the drives are trimmed evenly. I would like to go to a mechanical set up. If you decide to go electric and would like to sell your mechanical components let me know.
Thanks and good luck. Keith [email protected] |
The mechanical set up will be more reliable. Your problem is probally in the acturator attached to your trim ram or in your cable. IMO It is usaully easier to fix a mechanical problem you can see than a electrical problem you cant.

stay mech.
You will always have better readings that's why the racers and all top of the line offshore boats use mech.indicators.:sport009: Sschaffe I am in Boston have a 33-Sutphen too ! Jay

Mechanical. For all the reasons stated above.
