Bravo One Shifts, Upper Turns, Lower Doesn't
I recently purchased a Bravo One drive. The drive had been drained of all of its gear lube and sitting for some time. While on the bench, I shifted the drive manually, as I have done on every other drive I have ever bought. The upper shaft turns, but the lower doesn't. The lower unit turns, but the upper doesn't.
The guy who I bought it from is trying to tell me that the drive has to be filled with fluid for the cone clutch to engage and the drive to turn properly. Two questions: 1.) Is that true? 2.) If I pump the drive full of Merc Hi-Perf lube and turn it through while in gear, should it engage? My first inclination was that the drive is blown and I asked for my money back - he does not want to give my money back, rather he wants me to send the drive to him, so he can put it on a boat, fill it with lube and test it. Help! |
Sounds like the upper drive shaft is broken.
I just had mine do the same. Gave same symtoms as you describe. |
Cig,
the drive should shift and work without lube. I would pull the back cap and watch the shift fork move and see if the cone is being moved into one of the gears. If it is, then I would split the upper from the lower and take a look. Also look for metal fragments.. I wouldnt send it back unless he agreed to pay you back. Something smells about this deal.. Hope that helps. D*ck |
I think its bogus. My first inclination was that the driveshaft was broken.
Upon further investigation, and on the request and advice of the seller, I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt, fill the drive with hi-perf lube and then try it again. When I tried to remove the lower plug, it was so mangled that even a 5/8" slotted screwdriver couldn't get a bite on it. I doubt that the seller had ever removed it, and in my opinion, if he did and he reused that plug as opposed to replacing it, he's a dope. Oh well, we'll see - I put him on notice that if we don't have an amicable resolve by 5PM today, I'm going to file a dispute with eBay and PayPal, leave negative feedback for him regarding this transaction, and seek any other legal remedy possible. |
