SS is 3" shorter then a stock alpha. SS uses a shorter upper case and uses a outboard CLE lower gearcase.

The upper case is not shorter. It's a standard dimension Gen 1 Alpha. I've never heard it confirmed they had HD upper gears from Merc but the parts breakdown I have for the drive lists the HD gear part numbers. The lower case is 2.5" shorter than a standard Gen 1 and has a crecent shape w built in nosecone. The cone is not as good as an Hydromotive design but gets the job done. The vertical driveshaft is also shorter and the water pump setup is a little different. It also has a low water pickup due to its shorter length. It's the same as adding an Imco shorty lower to a Bravo. |

It DOES have a shorter upper, with no cast in cavatation plate like a standard alpha. It does have HD gears. I have one, and have had a few before the one I have now.
