Replacing Drve shaft Assembly

If its not one thing ...... Installed all MSD componets and when to try things out and idleing out I can hear a clunking or metal to metal sound coming from the engine room ..It sounds like its at the rear of the port motor. I know one drive shaft is new and the other looked pretty rough when we hung the drives (on the list). I'm hoping thats what it is .. Almost sounds like something is loose but I was by myself and it was hard to check .... my question is how difficult a job to replace the whole driveshaft assembly ? Thanks .....m

Its not hard to do, but its a bit tricky. You have to reset the preload on the upper bearings and time the gears when re-assembling. I would suggest you check with a Merc service manual before attempting it on your own.

Took the hatch off and went for a cruise and no noise to be found ...prob a wrench ...bolt ..socket ...bouncing around the drive shaft .... I hope .......

The input shaft can be replaced without getting into the upper at all. Just take it apart at the U-joints. All of the ones that I have seen can be done this way. I vaguely remember reading that some of the input shaft assemblies do not have removable U-joints in which case you'ld have to do it as mentioned above.

Last time I just replaced the whole assembly ...It would be an option to rebuild the Joints .. I believe the newer unit cannot be rebuilt .....m
