Educate me on TRS drives

I did some searching and found a few threads about TRS drives. I came to the conclusion that they were outdated and couldnt handle much power. Now I am starting to think I was wrong in my conclusion.....

Someone please tell me why these things are in alot of older Cigs with substantial power infront of them? How much can they handle on a regular basis and still be reliable?

500hp all day long...more if you are good on the sticks and know how to take off properly.....parts for them are still around through i dont think anyone is actually making parts anymore....Konrads are a direct bolt on replacement so even if you blowup your drive you wont be SOL.....i personaly like them...yeah yeah yeah the trans does rob some power but i would take that drive over a Bravo anyday :)

The were offered with motor packages up to 420's from Merc. I agree on boats up to 500 hp they are nice drives. The boats they came on often ride nicer than bravo's. They were popular for many years and nice used parts become available from time to time.

Good thread Thanks for the info guys. I am running 2 of them on the race boat with Merc Trans hope they hold up.

Of all the things on my boat I worry about breaking the drives are not an issue. I change the gearlube and keep paint on them. THAT IS IT!!

I was running them with 625 a side on my 38 Scarab and didn'thave any probs with them.

You can get parts form BAM marine in FL.

You can usually get a pretty good deal on boats that are rigged with them because people are scared of those drives.

How often did you ever hear about trs drives breaking?? The TRS was and still is a bullet proof outdrive. They will take the horsepower and keep on going. Can anyone say that about Bravo Drives ????And yes Konrad does have a replacement for the TRS and all you have to replace is the gimble helment and makes a very nice package. Konrad has a thread posted in this section

If comparing a trs and bravo that has not been upgraded and the same year. I would go with the TRS. But, I would beleive that any early 90's bravo has been uprgraded due to the supersecion of part numbers.
