stuck TRS
Ever had a TRS that would not come off boat?
I removed first drive, removed nuts, drive came right off. Second drive, removed nuts drive moved about 1/4" and will not come off? Lower part of drive appears loose, upper part of drive around shaft is frozen, i have had these on and off half dozen times in last few years, what am i missing. Thanks, |
Are the engines/transmissions out? I've seen the shafts stick in the trans tailstock.
|
No, just removing drives to have work done.
How dp you get the shaft out? |
mite have to pull the motor...easy I did mine 4 times a year ago...sucks tho...
|
Worst case - pull the rear cover on the drive, remove the nut holding the input shaft, now you can pull the drive (the u jount shaft will stay with the boat) and see what is going on.

i have pounded in wood wedges from both sides and have had good luck. if it has a merc trans sometimes the spring on the end of the input shaft can get stuck.

Lack of grease and a little water will lock input and tailshaft together.
Had a #3 stick before. The wood wedges than a forklift on top of a lot of prayers and of course lots of cussing. I forget how many hours of fighting with it. All I remember is it was ugly. Good Luck |
That reminds me of trying to get a set of stuck III gimbals off of an old Cig 35. We almost pulled a barn down- chained the gimbal to a huge post and hooked a truck to the trailer. That barn leaned about a foot when the slack of the chain finally caught. I thought for sure they were going to find our bodies in the rubble the next morning.

I've seen folks do a whole lot of damage when they get desperate and start hammering wedges in between the drive and gimbal.
Mark offered the best advice; pull the rear cover on the drive, remove the nut holding the input shaft. |
I agree with Lofty. Be careful not to tear up the mating surfaces of bellhousing and drive.
The fact is if you can't get the input out of the tailstock you will be pulling motors and replacing input yoke and tailstock. Plus what ever else you tore up in the process. |
