possible drive fluid leak

have a xr drive with ITS took it out with res bottle full, then alarm went off so filled up as i was putting on trailer, sat for 5 days and when i checked the bottle again it was empty, but no fluid in the bilge or under drive on the pavement, so filled it up again and took the boat out and had to refill the res bottle 2 more times, so my question is can it just be an air bubble in the drive or could it possibly be leaking thru check valve, but why no signs of fluid underneath,
i was thinking of pulling drive to do full leakdown but should i try and just change the fluid and see if that would be the prob,
anybody ever had to fill the bottle more than 3 times?

yeah....if you didn't put ANY lube in the drive before you ran it. :)

J/K, good luck and nice ride!!

My guess is, ya got 3 pints of drive oil in your bellows.

dmoore is probably right.

how long has it been sitting?
if there was possible high water in the bilge, then you probably ate the input shaft seal.

Being an XR drive, if the input shaft seal retainer has not been replaced with the upgrade unit, then it probably has pushed the seal into the yoke an ate it.. Pull the drive, look in the bellows. If you seen any lube there.. the seal is probably at fault. A new reatainer seal kit is needed.

Hope this helps.

Will, take the top plug out and see if anything comes out. If it comes out you should have enough to not cause harm, unless you added a gallon or 2. Also, what is the color of the fluid. If black, it might have gotton hot. Probably should have the fluid changed at least. Lastly, if you can pull the drive, look inside the bellows. This is where mine was leaking but it was because of a chitty casing. Another $1000 bucks spent fixing a drive with 20 house on it. Great for me! ;(

ordered a seal today , i'm gonna pull the drive and check it out.

good thing i pulled em!
bearings were dry, lot of condensation from where it sat for 2 years without grease! going to replace both seals, gimbal bearings and u-joints, glad it leaked now so it showed a possible problem, instead of 50 miles down the river!
