Stripped one of my 4 bolts of my top-cap !! SOLVED
 

Ok whats next ? , when i check the torque of the 4 bolts on the top-cap of my XR drive , my torque wrench was not adjust right ( i need 22 lbs/ft ) , what i can use to fix it ? a Helicoil ? or insert , or have you a better idea ? thanks in advance

Those are removable studs that you can get out and replace with new studs......don't ask me how I know! :rolleyes:

25, use the helicoil, quick fix. Does it have the ribbed top cap? If it does, then stud the top cap. Use red loctite to put the studs in the case.. You will be better off.. and if you dont have the ribbed top cap, time to upgrade.. :)

The ribbed top cap gives the case some rigidity because it is effectly very thick with the added ribs. The studs fill the holes in the case and being loctited in, are not prone to stripping the threads and such from repeated removal. I like to think the studs and ribbed top cap add strength to the upper case, minimizing flix and helping keep the gears in position better. Merc offers studs for that cap, but they are very proud of them. I have them made locally with the course thread on one end for the case and fine thread on the other for the nuts. Use a SS AN washer under it and look at the way the washer is stamped. There will be a side that has rounded edges and the other side will have sharp edges. I make sure the rounded side goes against the cap to help eliminate scarring and a place for corosion to forming..

Thanks again for the fast respond Dick , i will ask at my work (machine shop) to have one made fine end and coarse thread 3/8-16 and 3/8-24.....

As said before, heli-coil. You can also use time-sert if you can find them.

Thanks for all your help , but after invistigation , i found it`s not the right bolt we use for the ribbed top-cap ( it`s too short ) i redone the thread with tap , and put the good bolt with the right length , and i can right now re-torque to 22 lbs :cool-smiley-026:
