Sportmaster cavitation plate
This weekend one of my cavitation plates broke. I started having a heck of a time getting on plane and when I went looking, I found that one whole side of the plate on one drive was gone. The other side has a crack that is almost identical to the broken one. I did not hit anything, the props and drive housings are fine. Two questions: 1. Is this normal? 2. Does anyone know where I can get a couple of them?

you hit something! maybe you didn't notice the piece of wood between the plate & the prop, but it was there. they don't break without help.

Did you have the old style or the new ss one that has two bolts to help hold it? 281-326-4800

I was able to have a local machine shop fabricate a new plate. I have the old style aluminum plates, and the tech at Mercury Racing told me that they changed to stainless because of this issue with aluminum. Anyway, I stuck with aluminum for now because the price was right.

Look at a new style plate and ad the extra screws to help hold it in place.

Is there any benifit to running them?

Do you have Sportmasters? Can you get on plane easy? If you are able to plane your boat without them, it is less drag, which could increase your speed. The only real test, in my opinion, is to try it both ways! Dave |
I have Sportmasters and can get on plane. I have a tunnel tab too. I use it to help get on plane. Thanks for the imfo.

I had the same problem a couple years ago. Mercury Racing sent me two new stainless plates and they covered the cost $400.00
