Forgot trailer trim??
Figured id ask,
I was docking my boat this weekened and was going to pull out so I brought my drive to trailer postion. Then my wife wantd to pull into a slip so I moved the boat while I was going I relized I was still in trailer trim. I stoped and lowered the drive. Could any damage have been done?? I was in reverse on the dock no RPM maybe 1100-1200?? Thanks |
I have seen people start their engines with the drive all the way up. It does put a severe angle on the ujoints. But unless you put some power to it.. I doubt you hurt it.
Wouldnt hurt to pull it an look at it, but with little power to it, unless the ujoints were in poor shape to begin with, you should be good. Hope this helps Dick |
im no professional but we use to have a 18 foot bowrider with a 3.0 merc and a alpha one, we always use to idle out from the beach with the motor pretty high, and never had any problems.

Thanks for the feed back I kinda figured that but I always worry. Thanks again

A friend of mine bought an old 230 Conquest with a Volvo Penta Duo-prop, and the boat had all the origonal manuals including the one for the engine and drive.
The factory wrote right in the operaters manual, it's ok to use the drive all you want in the trailer position as long as you don't throttle over 1000 rpm. That drive lifts so high the rear prop comes out of the water, and the whole drive is higher than the bottom of the V on the hull. |
As long as you didn't hear a lot of clunking and feel a lot of vibration, it will be fine.

What Griff said...

I did feel vibration, I have not used the boat since, but when I pulled out and ran it on a hose and put it in drive, it seemed fine no more vibration. What can happen if I felt vibration?? Thanks

That would have been the U joints binding a little. It happens when trimmed way high. It should still be fine. Run the boat and be aware of any future vibrations. Don't get paranoid about it though.
People trim too high all the time and it doesn't break stuff. It should be fine. |
Matt,
It is normal to feel vibration when the drive is all the way up like that. The ujoints are on a tight angle and will rattle. I wouldnt worry about it.. go boating. |
