Newer Xz drive with old B1 transom

I have just purchased an XZ drive and wonder if my '01 Bravo 1 assembly is going to work with it or am I going to have the same issues people with XR have? If I do need new is it worth it to use an HP assembly? What is the real diff. between std and HP? Boat motor is single about 600hp.

see page 2 of this thread it's the first post called bravo to XR they talked about some of this.

jodane,
you will need the gimbel bearing kit with trim ram spacers. The HP transom is a much better unit. The hinge pins dont unscrew as you trim the drive up and down over the years.
I have seen a lot people run the standard one, but I broke one about 14yrs ago and I wont attempt to save a nickel to not have the better piece. Some day I will pony up for the Imco transom assembly..

Ok, so gimbal bearing kit and ram spacers correct? Where do I look on the drive to make sure I get the correct kit? Do I have to have the old one out to find this #? Is there any real disadvantage to leaving the old assembly in? I have a new gimbal ring already.

The kit pn is 30-862540A2. It comes with the new bearing (which is .050" offset from the previous version), spacers and a new bellows ring.
The XZ drive has much larger ujoints and if you run it with an old style gimbal bearing setup it will hit.

The old style gimbal bearing has been discontinued, but
I am not sure what year they may have upgraded the transom assy to be universal and work with the XZ/XR drives.
The instructions with the kit explain to pull the drive and look for a red dot on the outer face of the gimbal bearing. If you have the red dot, you dont need to change it.
But, because the gimbal bearing has been updated, if it has ever been replaced then it would have been replaced with one with a red dot. That doesnt mean the bellows sleeve had been replaced or the trim spacers had been installed.
I dont know for sure what the difference is in the bellows ring. I think it might be shorter. The one in the kit measures just over 3/4" with a ruler. If you need exact, I can put calipers on it.
What I would do it look at the bearing, no red dot = new kit.
If you have the red dot, see if you can measure the length of the bellows ring and we can compare them to the kit I have in stock. Which I would be happy to sell to you, if you actually need it..

Hope this helps.

Mr Gadgets I was just curious have you had a chance to measure out the new style Bellows ring that comes in this kit verses an old one.the reson I ask is I think I gave out some bad info after reading this post and if I can I would like to try to clear it up to the other guy.thank you for your time.

Boat,
I dont have access to an old style ring without removing the drive on my boat. No time to do that at present. If someone else has one they can measure, I can compare.. to help out.
