Which outdrive gears to go with?
Hey guys I just bought an 1989 wellcraft eclipse 232. It came with a 350 that didnt run so I just bought a 1996 454 magnum for it. Now i have the outdrive to worry about. Right now i have the option of buying a bravo 1 outdrive with a 1.36 gear ratio or buying a bravo 1 outdrive with a 1.5 gear ratio. I am really confused on which drive to go with...both are relatively the same price, i just have no clue which one to go with. I dont really understand how the gear ratios differ and what the the pros and cons of each gear ratio are.
You guys have any ideas? Thank you for any help, Chuck |
1:36 is a lot of gear for a stock 454. It "could" work if you have a small enough prop for it, but...... the ideal setup would be a 1:50 with the correct prop.

Definately the 1.50. You'll probably still only turn a 23" prop.

I agree. A 1.36 gear should only be used if you run out of available props for a 1.50.

Gotcha. Thank you guys!

Then that leaves the prop. Do you guys know what pitch i shoud go with? 23 pitch or a 21 pitch 3 blade?
|
I'm about 90% sure you'll need a 23" Mirage Plus. If you want better cruise and holeshot go with a 22 Bravo 4 blade and loose 2 mph on the top end.

Thank You Guys Very Much!

I have a 23 pitch mirage prop if you are interested.
