What HP are say a #3, #3A, #4, #4 big shaft, #5, etc, rated to withstand??

I believe it's 750 hp.

#5 and 3a, is 750 but back then thats all they had !!!
#3 was ~650 and 4 700 !!!

I seen them all behind 1200 + HP engines and they'r fine !!!!!:ernaehrung004:

Buddy of mine looking at a #3 boat with 900+hp. Small shaft drives. Another buddy of mine has same drives, 15 seasons on them with no issues, although he only runs 600HP thru them, but he does hammer on them pretty good in a heavy old boat!

Try that with Bravo drives and see how long they last! Those Mercury Racing SSM drives are expensive but worth it.
