Has anybody gottin any prices for a total rebuild or had one rebuilt lately? Well like most of you I called several repitable people from sugestions from this site. I told them I had the usual right hand gear delema and would need gears bearings and of coars shims and gaskets, and repainted The same thing a thousand of them need. No cases no shafts . Now after talking to a guys who built hundreds of these things (his words) wouldent you think he would quote a fairly accurate price? Well He quoted me 1500 1600 If they needed new gears and about 500to600 less if it didnt. Well stupid me sent both of them to him for repair. Well now the bill comes in at over 2700 each!! What should I have expected? What should I do? I was expecting less than 3000 for both now there over 5400. I cant be the only one although he came highly recamended off this site.I hate to name names but if this is his normal buisness M/O then he never should have been recomended, and others should be warned.

 DAUUUM
Thats crazy,,i can get 2 complette rebuilt -0- hours for less then that !!!!!!!! I think its a shame and a tat too much overthe edge ?! But again i don't know what he did to them ?!:party-smiley-004: |
It's hard to tell unless you know exactly what he put in them.He may have meant that price for parts only.Around St.Louis area labor is $89 a hour. From Mercury gears are $650 for uppers and $450 for lowers and bearings are $450 for all. Then you have some seals and labor.Probably about 4hrs. to shim it all out and final assembly. And then you had him paint them which was probably $50 each.I always buy the bearings myself for about 1/3 of what Mercury gets.He probably buys them like that also then charges Mercury prices. I disassemble and change the bearings and gears around myself then take it in for shimming and final assembly. Then bring home and paint myself.Save a few hundred that way.Just figure you have the piece of mind knowing you have fresh drives!

Thats the dilemma i have been in. Nowadays, seems better to just buy another drive rather than rebuild them. I have one that has busted lower gears, and the prop shaft splines are tweaked. For what I'll have in it, I may as well just buy another rebuilt drive from someone. A friend of mine rebuilds his own, and was/is gonna do mine once i figure out what route im gonna go, and he has 1700 in parts just in his doing it himself.

I will post the quotes after I figure out how but heres a couple prices from memory . Labor was 495 each paint and a little welding 400 each 285 and 295 for gears all the rest are bearins seals and shims and gaskets!! So 3000k there another 2400 for the rest? must be straight out of the merc. list price catilog. But the point realy is these are the same pieces he always uses and 2 weeks earlier 15 16 was quoted talk about bait and switch!! I hope you guys never use him!

I would try to negotiate with him ,,before u pay . |
About all you can do is get this guy to sit down and go over the bill with you part by part and you have a list of the parts and prices to compare. All the prices I gave you earlier are current Mercury prices.Just let him know his prices are questionable and your not happy beings he quoted you a lot less in the beginning. Also you will find out exactly what he put in them.

Not sure of the laws where your at, but here in CA, if they give you a quote, and the price is 20% greater, they have to get your approval. I would have thought that since the price almost DOUBLED the guy would have at a minimum, given you a call. Just seems like good business.
