TRS how do I know when its time to rebuild?
Left hand drive feels like only a little slack in gear mesh, ad turns over fairly easy, but Right (counter-rotating) feels tighter to turn (by hand turning the prop)... more resistance... and a little more slack, or lash... other than waiting till it grenades, how do I know when it's time to rebuild? Drive oil looks OK, and only very tiny dusting on drain magnet. Oil samples sent off to analyze (Cat), but no results back.... Any suggestions appreciated. Am greasing the u-joints on Right side, since that hasn't been done in a few years.

Pulled the Starboard drive and it turns as easy as Port side when not connected to the trans.. so it must be the transmission that is giving the sensation of being harder to turn and not the outdrive itself. I wish someone had a comment on when to rebuild.... or is it typical to just wait till the drive fails?

The Trs drives are pretty tuff. But there are not many people around that know much about them anymore. I run them on the race boat and just change the oil every couple races without any troubles. I would look around your area for someone that knows about them and have them looked at if you think there might be a problem. Will be cheeper in the long run as parts are getting hard to fined. Just my 2 cents

The slack in the gear should be around 1/16 of an inch.
The drive connected to the tranny should feel a little tuff ,your turning everything all the way to the clutchplates. But both should feel the same. Colabella here in FL can help u !! But TRS and Speedmaster old style stuff is not cheap. U can always run them until complete failure and then convert to BRAVO's !! |
Thank you Mike O, and daredevil.... I will keep fresh oil in them, and have found a place to have them looked at locally for a "hands on" opinion...... Good luck Racing!

nothing like a little misinformation.
It all depends on how many hours you have on the drives and how much horsepower you are pushing through them. and how you drive the boat.. We used to rebuild the drives at 150 hr intervals . with 600 hp . We found that the gears start to fatigue at that point . |
