Bravo drive assembly question

Are all the bravo 1 gears the same? I am trying to assemble an upper unit and when the top cap goes on there is not enough clearance everything locks up. I had one guy tell me there are different gear sets that won't fit in all cases. another told me there were different center shafts. I need to know so I can get the right parts.
Thanks

The X gears ( which is all you can buy now
from mercury ) are thicker, which requires
you to use thinner thrust races.

If you bought a new set of gears and are trying
to put them in a pre OM s/n case, you have to use
thrust races that are .040" thinner than the old ones.

Also change the races on the towers

I had a set of used gears I picked up on ebay. So are all the center shafts and gears interchangable with the use of proper races?

jlowe,
you have to identify the gears you have. Inside the gear is a bearing, if it is 1" tall you have the old style gears that need the taller tower race.
If they measure about 7/8" then you need to install the short tower races on the tall towers. They will be down on the tower about 1/8". There is a special tool for proper install height.
You can not run a tall race on a short tower.
The clutch shafts will interchange but you want a newer one, they have one hole in the side of the lower shaft.
The older gears use a taller cone clutch. It won't work with the newer gears that have the short bearings in them..
What year is your drive and what gears did you end up with?

Hope this helps.
