trs drives
Getting ready to put my newly rebuilt drives one the boat.Thinking about the tirn in or turn out soga. Why do they call it turn in or out ? Why not clockwise or counter clockwise? Looking at the back of the boat forward both engines turn counter clockwise one drive turns the same as its input one drive turns oppisite. I have a 40 ft chris craft . From what Ive read I think boats like this do better with the stern being help lifted up. So I think the one marked 'L' normaly on the left from factery would mount on the right side and that prop rotation would be CCW is this correct ? That means the left prop turns CW.Is this what you call turn in or out? Sorry for the long thread just want to be clear.

Yes that would be turning in with the LH drive on the right side (starboard) and the RH drive on the left (port). This is called in because the props are turning inward towards each other.Switch them and they would be turning out away from each other.RH is always clockwise no mater what side it is on and LH is always counter clockwise rotation. Not so sure they always come from the factory left on left. What transmissions do you have?

The LH goes to the left side of the boat and the RH goes to the right side of the boat . As easy as that !!!:grinser010:
So they would now spin out !!!!! And it has nothing todo with your trannys ! And also ,,i think your better of putting them back on like this ,,they where like this . Maybe try a 4 blade prop or even 5 to get lift but do not switch them on your conventional V 41 stinger. Does not make any sense. |
redcorvetteman3, Just a reminder if you are running the Merc Trans ll transmissions be sure to grease the tailstock bearings before you put on the drives. Also some grease on the drive shaft splines and the upper and lower gimble bearings.

Turning in is when the TOPS of the props turn at one another. Turning out is when the TOPS of the props turn away from one another.
Turning in ussually gives you some faster speeds but reduced handling. Turning out ussually looses some speed and gains in the handling. I would not run 4 or 5 blades on a TRS drive on a heavy boat like yours unless you have small power. |

Im running the Borg Warners. The four or five blade prop scares me a little on heavy boat also I realize its the abuse you give it either throttles or waves. Thanks

My 40ft Formula runs about 4mph faster with them turning in. No handling issues, docking a little trickier, but nothing major. carries the bow much better with them spinning inwards.

Formulas (flat bottom ones) LOVE them turning in! You are correct the docking does become harder. My 302 I was able to get over just over 60 with stock 330's turning in and only about 56 or so turning out. So it seems that 5 MPH is the benifiet of doing so with them. The Chris Craft is a heavier boat then the Formula however so not sure how it will work out for you. If I was to guess you could come out better? Of course in my case with the 302 if I did not want to twist up my 330's I would have gone with different props.

So other than maybe a docking issue it most likely wont be worse speed wise but a chance its better
