Alpha Gen II to Gen I ???
A buddy of mine would like to put his Gen I Alpha SS on his Gen II transom assembly. Can we just swap the Gen II bellhousing with a Gen I ?
Thanks, Kurt |
Here's what I did to make it fit.
1) Pushed the brass bushing up about 3/8". 2) Fill the cavity below the yellow line with some high strength epoxy. 3) I used a portable band saw but you may be able to get away using a sawzal, but you need to cut the bottom of the bellhousing off (below blue line). You may be able to see a casting line. That is the guide I went by. 4) Get a gen 1 shift shaft and you should be good to go for mounting up. You will find the trim rams are not going to extend the drive up as high as you Gen 2. This is due to an altered cross pin location. I solved this my having a friend machine up some spacers (about an 1.5" I think), and then a prop shop helped me with the welding. Here are the pictures. http://img19.imageshack.us/i/img1515ss.jpg/ http://img81.imageshack.us/i/pict0749ss.jpg/ I was also able to get my hands on another set of those side wear plates to help make up for the gap on the sides. Hope this helps. |
Kurt i have a fresh water gen one transom assembly it sounds like it would be easier to spend a couple hours puling the engine rather then getting into all that fabrication.

Fabrication, are you kidding me on that it would be faster to change transom assemblies? It was very easy to do and it does not change the ablility to put a gen 2 drive back in place (other than the lengthened trim rams). Doing the trim rams isn't necessary, but it will give you back your max tilt position. I am by no means a fabricator, and if I can do it, I would expect anyone who can change out his own drive can do it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Does anyone know if I can just bolt in a Gen 1 bell into the Gen II gimbal?

The bellhousing itself is a little narrower on the Gen 1 so you would have to make up a spacer to take up the room on each side.

Kurt, Rootsy on the Donzi.net site did one much easier than that... PM him
