it will not come off. i can get it back 1/8 inch thats it!
am i missing something here? i have the trim cylnders off prop and 6 lock nuts. either im missing some thing here or it's just a bear. some one tried to steal it and the gasket is all torn up so i need to replace it. any help would be great.

Stick the rams back on ,,,stick a 2X4 inbetween the boat and the rear end of the drive ( between the gimbal ) tehn slowly trim down.

EASY !!!!!!

And keep on watching it.

Should come off.

Swing the drive up some by hand high enough to slip a piece of 1"x1" or 2'x4" cross ways underneth between the drive and gimble ring.Let drive rest down on the piece of wood. Now lift the drive a couple of inches and let it fall on the wood.Usually that will break them apart.I don't know how bad your gasket got torn up but that gasket doesn't really seal anything.I think it's just to keep the 2 surfaces from corroding together.Sorry to hear about the thiefs. At least they didn't get it.

A tried and true old trick: Leave the trim pistons attached to the drive, make a wedge (either a block of wood, or a piece of aluminum) and fit it between the top of the drive and the top of the transom assembly. Have one person stand with the drive, stabilizing the wedge, and then slowly use the trim pistons to break the drive loose.

Be very careful using Jim's method, it works, and I've done it, but you run the risk of breaking the gimbal ring if you drop the drive too hard on the crossbeam.

Also, try not to pry anywhere (more than the thieves have already) on any of the sealing surfaces where the gimbal and outdrive mate up, as you can easily damage the aluminum.

Hope this was of some help to you, and best of luck with the removal.

If the above fail, or you don't want to risk damaging the gimbal ring, then hook-up a come-a-long to the lift ring on the top of the drive and attach it to a solid object and start your pull. If it's real bad then you may end up having to cut out your bellows and seperate the u-joint at the yoke. After you get the drive off you will still have to pull the yoke out of the gimbal bearing and spine shaft which are rusted together.

Make sure you support the drive with a lift or lots of blocks. I've had to do this on a boat that wasn't taken care of. When your done just make sure you pull drives once a year to inspect, lube, and replace any worn parts.

You can also take off back cover and remove pinion nut rather then trying to seperate u-joints in such a tight spot. You will have to lock drive with a piece of wood between prop and lower unit to do this. Once drive is off then use a slap hammer type puller to remove shaft from bearing. Replace gimbal bearing before putting drive back on. You also have to make sure when you put shaft back in drive it is tourqued according to specs. To replace gimbal bearing eng. will have to be out of boat.

Only if you have Merc transmissions.

With the Borg Warner tranny's once you have the drive out you can take the snap ring out of the transmission tailstock thru the bellows with snap ring pliers. Pull the bearing and replace.

Just did that 2 weekends ago. :)
