Tie bar question

When is a tie bar needed and how do they help?
I have twin Merc 888. I think they are pre alpha drives non counter rotating.

Its always a good idea to have one, helps take the load off the tiller to i have been told.

On counter rotating drives they help balance the load. Non counter rotating I can't see it helping at all.
