The drives you are showing appear to be #3s. 3As have a larger prop shaft (26 splines) as opposed to the #3s 19 splines.

Here are a couple of pictures of my 3As for comparison.

You can also see that the torpedo or bullet on the lower section is a little larger on the 3As to accomodate the larger prop shaft.

Also the hole where the trim rams hook to is about 7/8" on 3 and 1" on 3A. I was educated by a fellow member on this as well.

Does anyone know if Merc actually made a III with the crescent, or were these modified by someone? All the III's I have experience with have a straight leading edge above the gearcase.
