Red Line Oil
Does anybody use the heavy shock in a bravo. I switched last year with about 15 hrs, but a little concerned because of the thickness
|
I ran it in bravos for 100hrs. No problem. It doesnt mix or emulsify water as Mercury gear oil does, but that stuff will not come off the gears. Plus when people look at your overflow bottles and they are red, they get this strange look on their face.
|
It definatly sticks to the gears, but does it wash any of the metalic away or just help grind it in.
|
Thats my thought, the stuff is so sticky and the Bravos create so much metal. That it could be a problem if it isn't changed often enough. At break in, the gears give off a lot of metal and the lube needs to be drained at early intervals.. That metal gets into the preloaded bearings and ruins them..
I just opened up a Bravo I built that had two seasons on it.. about 50+hrs total. First season was 825hp the second was 900-950hp. The drive looked very nice inside, very little wear on anything.. but it didnt have Merc or Redline, or Amsoil in it. |
A friend of mine had a 27 ft. Carrera w/ 2 400HP small blocks and Alpha SS drives. Kept blowing up drives(Alpha SS hard to come by). Used Redline Shock Proof Gear oil, and never blew a drive again. He now swears by it and tells everyone about it!

Seriously? You're not just bustin' on us here now are you? I'm thinking Auto Zone on the way home from work today. :D |
Been doing it that way for 10-12yrs. My B1 with XR gears has 300hrs on it, behind 700hp. We'll see when I get the new motor in front of it, how long it lasts. :)

That's pretty impressive gear life! So would the mix be 5oz of the Prolong per drive? Or per quart of gear lube? |
Per drive.. a little less than 10% is what it comes out to.. I believe the longevity of my gears has to do with the born on date. I think they made them better in the old days..
|
Thats funny, years ago, I mean many, many, a friend raced outboards, this is before any additives and Mercury didnt even have High Performance gear oil. Gear cases were not made to surface and do what he did with them. His seemed to last longer than most. His secret forumula was STP in the gearcase with the gear oil. He swore by it.

I have heard this too. That the old stock trs gears held up better than the ones they stock now. Either someone else is making them, or they changed something in the gear manufacturing process. Prob to either save money, or EPA crap.
Plus they sell more gears !!! :drink: |
Would anybody reccommend the red line over the amsoil the guy who bought my new boat from took it from a 502 to a 509racing crb motorpushing 550hp and that was he put in it ( redline) Then took it to a powerboat place in mn to get the carb jets replaced and changed it with merc because he thought it was power steering fluid. Anyway that is a whole diffrent story but is the redline going to be any better for my hi performance motor then the 75 100 amsoil I just bought but have not put in yet. It is pushing 550 hp. I just dont know if thicker is better because the amsoil i got seems alot thinner.
The boat is a 99 260 Powerquest legend, Thanks for any Info |
