OMG now i am hearing all kinds of stuff from my mechanic who says that I need to install a reservior kit because my out drives are pre 1990. Any one know anything about this?

ken3765 03-29-2010 12:04 PM

oh and he still insist that the newer lower will not work with the older drive because the oil will not be transferring between the two? I just want to go boating in my new boat and can not get it out the yard lol

Plug the hole ...dont worry about the reservoirs ..... better hurry .....its warming up ......m

Without the reservoir, make sure you have an air space in the top of the drive, for expansion. In other words, fill till the fluid just starts to dribble out of the top hole with the drive standing straight up and down.
It would be good to have the reservoir so you know how much fluid is in the drive. Does the top cap have the dipstick in it? If it does then you are all set..

I am going to look, I don't think I have the dipstick. I do not have a reservoir, I was told there was a kit to add it though and I am looking into that now.

You have to see if your helmet on the transom assy has a hole for the plastic thing that pushes open the ball on the check valve in the drive. If the openings are there, then converting it would be easy. Not sure what you need to do, if doesnt have them. I never had to do one. But if it is a Merc kit they usually have good instructions.. They may bend you over for it.. but. :)
Let us know what you find out.

I converted two drives last year ....one Bellhousing had the Blank port for the Ball valve and the other did not ....I had to replace that Bellhousing ... But I am thinking your uppers dont have the port with the Plastic Bushing on the Drive? ...I was installing new drives and they were already setup for the remote Lube Monitor. So I just needed the Kits (plus one Bellhousing). Maybe Mr Tryce wil know about the uppers? ...If not Contact "Blue Thunder" on here or Boat Freaks ...He does a lot of older Merc Drive work.

I think I paid about 100.00 for the Monitor Kits ....here they are for 146.00 ... you need the kits .. they have everthing you will need ......m
