Speedometer water passage in lower

Is there a way to plug speedo water passage in lower without threading and screwing a plug in. If not using I know it needs to be plugged. What will happen if not plugged? Any help would be great

If you cut the hose on the outside of the lower unit, inside of the helmet, it will just blow out a little water and not hurt anything.

There should be a small hose on the leading edge of the drive just above the where the lower meets the upper, that could just be disconnected.
