..."off the wall".. drive question.

I am in the process of piecing together a "new" project boat...

The hull is a 1979 Excalibur 24.

It originally had a TRS drive with a Merctrans transmission...

I am in the process of building the engine which consists of a 540 with an M3 procharger..:drink:
I would think a conservetive hp estimate would be in the 800+ range...

I NOW am trying to figure out what to use for a drive without breaking the bank (the engine has aleady acomplished that)

I remember reading a while back that Imco ran a big single engine with a splitter box and two of their drives...

What do you think would happen if I did about the same thing but used Alpha drives??

I'm sure I could "gear up" the splitter box to limit the prop size to 21-23 pitch..

Would I just blow them up two at a time or would it handle the power??

Thanks,
Doug

How are you going to shift it? the alpha uses a momentary ign kill to shift. A 330 hp 454 can also do a remarkable job at preparing an alpha for a rebuild too.

No way I would do a splitter to Alphas. Thats like saying 2 Chevettes are as good as one Corvette.

You could buy a good used SSMIII or V for the price of a splitter box.

I would go with a Konrad.

Arneson on craigslist in NJ $2500.00

The TRS with a BAM tranny would have held up, not much else lasts to long under 900hp. Only Arneson and Konrad!

Upgrade the transmission for sure. Stock trans will not make it on that power. TRS could be made to live if careful. Two Alphas no chance. I would look for a used Number Five or Wet sump Six.
